St Matts Anglican Church

West Pennant Hills

After years of sowing and watering, by God’s grace St Matt’s is in a season of fruitfulness, increasing in love and number. And now, following the appointment of one of our assistants to rector, we’re looking for a recent assistant pastor to serve Jesus alongside the 600+ adults and kids who have found their place at St Matt’s.

The Church you’d be welcomed into

St Matt’s is a multi-congregational church located in the Hills region of North West Sydney, made up of long-term members and an increasing number of new families. It’s a warm church that emphasises grace in relationships and thoughtful obedience to the word of God. After recent years marked by stability and helpful strategic adjustments, earlier this year our senior assistant pastor was appointed rector, allowing for a smooth transition and further stability.

The Staff team you’d be serving alongside

Our staff team values communication, collaboration and fun as we share in the serious work of gospel ministry, and has been described by one member as “the happiest staff team” he has experienced in 50 years of pastoral ministry. They have worked hard to establish a healthy culture of respect and genuine affection. Recent growth has, however, led to roles being stretched, and so the team is excited to welcome in a new member.

The Role you’d be accepting

A general pastoral role to adults, with particular responsibilities tailored to your gifts in one of the following main areas:

- Parents & Young Families
- Established Generations (middle-aged members and older)
- Optionally including oversight of a congregation.

We are blessed to be able to prioritise hiring the “right person” for our church and staff team culture, with some degree of flexibility in designing a role that suits. Specific responsibilities would be determined with the successful candidate, but broad responsibilities would include some of the following:
- Discipleship and pastoral care
- Regular preaching or teaching
- Leading services
- Empowering members for ministry
- Implementing existing systems to facilitate follow up of newcomers and irregular attenders
- Initiatives that strengthen either our church community, our devotion to Jesus, our evangelistic endeavours or the effective running of our church services
- Baptisms, funerals, and (if ordained) weddings as required

The character, experience and skills you’d bring

Big picture - we’re looking for someone who lives out the call of 1 Peter 5: a shepherd under Christ who acts as an example as they willingly and humbly watch over the part of God’s flock under their care. The right candidate sincerely loves people, both the saints and the lost, and wants to see them thrive as disciples of Jesus.

Getting down to details -

- You’ll be able to initiate meaningful connections with people, sincerely listen to them, and lean in with comforting pastoral care when needed.
- You’ll be able to teach the Bible faithfully, clearly, and practically,

while living it out personally.
- You’ll have a strong foundation in reformed, evangelical theology and wisdom coming from previous pastoral experience (a theological degree is preferred, and being ordained or candidate for ordination in the Sydney Diocese is a plus).
- You’ll seek peace, both in your own relationships and by acting as a mediator.
- You’ll strive to be a joy to lead, while joyfully leading others.
- You’ll be able to initiate and complete projects on your own, while also collaborating on other projects.
- You’ll embrace the quirks of pastoral ministry - a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends, the ups and downs of empowering volunteers, and the general messiness of a church made up of sinners.
- You’ll already be proficient with basic computer software and able to learn other software such as ChurchSuite, Canva and Asana.

Stipend and Conditions

Stipend/salary will be according to Sydney Diocesan recommendations based on qualifications and experience. Housing or housing allowance will be provided.

The successful applicant must hold a current Working With Children Check (WWCC), Safe Ministry clearance, and Australian working rights.

Start Date

We are seeking someone who could begin as soon as possible. However, we are open to timing that allows the right person to finish current commitments, with a view to commencing no later than mid-January 2027.
