Public Sector People are partnering with Clarence Valley Council to appoint a Coordinator – Building Services within the Development and Land Use Planning team.
Covering more than 10,000 square kilometres and serving a community of over 50,000 residents, Clarence Valley Council is one of the largest and most diverse regional councils in coastal NSW. From rural properties and villages through to Grafton, Yamba and Maclean, the Building Services team delivers a broad range of certification and assessment work across an extensive local government area.
Following a recent organisational restructure, this is an exciting opportunity to lead an established technical team while helping embed a more streamlined service model that allows Building Services to focus on certification, assessment and customer service.
About the Role
Reporting to the Manager Development and Land Use Planning, you'll lead a team of six registered Building Surveyors and a Building Inspector, providing leadership, technical guidance and operational oversight across Council's Building Services function.
The team delivers a broad range of certification and development assessment work, predominantly across residential development (Class 1 and 10), together with commercial, industrial and public infrastructure projects.
While you'll remain technically involved where required, your primary focus will be supporting the team, driving consistency in decision-making, improving customer service and continuing to strengthen operational practices.
Building Services is currently transitioning to a new operating model, with a dedicated Compliance team being established separately.
This will allow the successful candidate to focus on leading the Building Services team while supporting the implementation of an improved organisational structure.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor and develop an experienced team of Building Surveyors and technical staff
- Coordinate the delivery of certification, assessment and inspection services
- Provide technical guidance on building legislation and certification matters
- Promote consistency across decision-making, customer service and operational practices
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across systems and service delivery
- Build strong relationships with planners, developers, consultants and the community
- Contribute to the ongoing development of the Building Services function during a period of positive organisational change
About You
You're a qualified Building Surveyor who enjoys supporting others and creating a positive, high-performing team workplace.
You may already be leading a team, or you could be an experienced Senior Building Surveyor ready to take the next step into leadership.
We're interested in professionals who bring sound technical knowledge together with the ability to mentor staff, build relationships and continuously improve the way services are delivered.
You'll bring:
- Registration with NSW Fair Trading (or eligibility for registration) as a: Building Surveyor Unrestricted (formerly A1)
– preferred; Building Surveyor Restricted All Classes (formerly A2); or Building Surveyor Restricted (Class 1 and 10 Buildings) and actively progressing steps towards Unrestricted/Restricted All Classes registration.
- Experience in building certification and development assessment
- Strong understanding of NSW planning and building legislation
- Leadership experience, or a demonstrated readiness to step into a leadership role
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- A collaborative, practical approach with a genuine interest in developing people and improving services
