Green Industry Project Officer

Level 6 | Full-time | Fixed term (11 months)

Location: Melbourne, VIC

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) is the peak body for unions in Australia. We represent working people and their unions, advancing workers’ rights through coordinated campaigns, policy advocacy and collective action.

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Green Industry Project Officer to support the ACTU’s work advancing green industry development in Australia. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to major national policy and industrial priorities, including the transition to a net zero economy and the creation of secure, union jobs in emerging industries.

About the role





Reporting to the Climate & Energy Manager, the Green Industry Project Officer will play a key role in advancing ACTU priorities on green industry and manufacturing.

You will work closely with affiliated unions, trades and labour councils, and civil society partners to support policy development, coordinate campaigns, and drive outcomes that ensure the energy transition delivers strong economic and job creation outcomes for working people.

This role is focused on accelerating the development of green industries in Australia, ensuring these industries generate high-quality union jobs, particularly in regions at the forefront of the energy transition.

Key responsibilities include

- Supporting the development and execution of ACTU strategy to accelerate green industry development and unionisation of emerging sectors
- Working with unions, trades and labour councils to coordinate and support on-the-ground advocacy and campaigns, including local YIMBY initiatives
- Undertaking research and contributing to policy development to overcome barriers to green industry growth and increase domestic capability




- Supporting the development of key policy publications and reports, including future iterations of the Sunshot green exports work
- Coordinating engagement with civil society partners and alliances to build support for ACTU priorities
- Monitoring developments in domestic and international green industry policy and identifying opportunities and risks
- Supporting engagement with government and key decision-makers to advance ACTU policy positions

About you

- Demonstrated experience in policy development, advocacy or campaigning in climate, energy, industry or related areas
- Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesise complex issues and develop practical policy solutions
- Experience coordinating stakeholders or campaigns to achieve defined outcomes
- Solid interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across unions and allied organisations
- Sound political judgement and the ability to navigate complex policy environments
- Ability to manage competing priorities and work independently
- A good understanding of trade unions, industrial relations and the ACTU
- A demonstrated commitment to social justice and union values

The ACTU offers a competitive salary of $146,958, along with:

- Additional 15% superannuation
