Role

Leading teachers will be highly skilled classroom practitioners and undertake leadership and management roles commensurate with their salary range.The role of leading teachers is to improve the skill, knowledge and performance of the teaching workforce in a school or group of schools and to improve the curriculum program of a school.

Typically, leading teachers are responsible for coordinating a number of staff to achieve improvements in teaching and learning which may involve the coordination and professional support of colleagues through modelling, collaborating and coaching and using processes that develop knowledge, practice and professional engagement in others.

Leading teachers are expected to lead and manage a significant area or function within the school with a high degree of independence to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program.

Leading teachers will be expected to make a significant contribution to policy development relating to teaching and learning in the school. A leading teacher has a direct impact and influence on the achievement of the school goals.

Leading teachers are usually responsible for the implementation of one or more priorities contained in the school strategic plan.

Responsibilities

In recognition of the importance of leadership and management combined with exemplary teaching practice for improved student learning outcomes, the key roles of the leading teachers may include but are not limited to:

- Leading and managing the implementation of whole-school improvement initiatives related to the school strategic plan and school priorities
- Leading and managing the implementation of whole-school improvement strategies related to curriculum planning and delivery;
- Leading and managing the provision of professional development and developing individual and team development plans for teaching staff within the priorities of the school;
- Leading and managing staff performance and development (review of staff);
- Teaching demonstration lessons;
- Leading and managing the development of the school's assessment and reporting policies and practices;
- Leading and managing the implementation of the school operations and policies related to student welfare and discipline;
- Leading the development of curriculum in a major learning area and participating in curriculum development in other areas;
- Responsibility for general discipline matters beyond the management of classroom teachers;
- Contributing to the overall leadership and management of the school;
- Contributing to the development of proposals for school council consideration;
- Developing and managing the school code of conduct.

Who May Apply

Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.

Position Description

The Leading Teacher for the Victorian Curriculum holds responsibility for enhancing student learning outcomes and fostering innovative teaching practices across all areas of the Victorian Curriculum. This position reports directly to the Assistant Principal of Teaching and Learning.

This involves:

- Lead and manage teaching and learning practices in collaboration with domain leaders.
- Implement innovative, research-based pedagogical approaches across the Victorian Curriculum.
- Ensure a guaranteed and viable curriculum, including the development and maintenance of unit outlines, learning sequences (Years 7 to 12), and related documentation.
- Leverage data to inform whole-school strategies for improved student learning outcomes.
- Oversee the development, implementation, and monitoring of assessment and reporting policies.
- Any other duties as directed by the principal

The Leading Teacher for the Victorian Curriculum reports directly to the Teaching and Learning Assistant Principal and Principal and is a member of the Teaching and Learning Executive.

Student Outcomes Focus

- Advocate for continuous improvement in student outcomes by supporting teachers and domain leaders.
- Lead the implementation of evident-based pedagogical strategies for Years 7-10.
- Facilitate co-construction of innovative teaching and learning strategies with teachers and students.Ensure compliance with Department of Education guidelines for assessment and reporting.
- Support student engagement by collaborating with sub-school leaders to implement relevant subjects and events.
- Facilitate the Junior School Student Progress Committee to analyse cohort level data and plan for interventions.

Leadership Focus

- Collaborate with the Teaching & Learning Executive and Assistant Principal to implement whole school pedagogy.
- Actively contribute to discussions and decisions at internal and external forums.
- Provide feedback to staff on teaching and learning strategies and practices.
- Support professional development initiatives based on evidence-based best practices.
- Analyse and interpret data from standardised testing such as NAPLAN and PAT and work together with the inclusion, literacy and numeracy specialists on strategies for improving student growth.

Organisational Focus

- Lead and coordinate planning meetings with domain leaders and staff.
- Oversee curriculum quality in English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, PE, and Arts and Technology.
- Coordinate the creation and dissemination of progress and semester reports.
- Lead the Domain Leaders across the school to ensure coherence aligned with the schools strategic plan and AIP.
- Chair domain leaders meetings, covering key areas such as:
- Curriculum quality and alignment
- Professional learning on leadership and data-informed practice
- Goal setting and progress tracking for learning areas
- Accurate record-keeping of meeting agendas and outcomes

- Represent the school at external stakeholder meetings as needed.
- Coordinate and lead the implementation of the NAPLAN testing for Year 7 and 9 cohorts which includes:

- Collaborate with the IT specialist to ensure all devices and network systems meet departmental standards and run smoothly for NAPLAN online testing
- Organise and deliver training for staff administering the test, covering NAPLAN protocols, online platform use, and test supervision procedure
- Design and distribute a detailed timetable for the four NAPLAN test sessions, ensuring minimal disruption to regular classes.

Community Focus

- Collaborate and communicate with stakeholders around course counselling
- Contribute to and present at information evenings as required
- Work with Sub-schools in facilitating Learning exports from year 7-10.

This role and role description may change across the tenure of the position depending on the needs of the school¿s Strategic plan.

Qualification Requirements

To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class:

- The person must have provisional or full registration approved by the Victorian Institute of Teaching; and
- if the person completed an Australian postgraduate level initial teaching program or course of study on or after 1 January 2024, they must demonstrate that they have satisfactorily completed a postgraduate level accredited initial teacher education program that has been accredited by an Australian State or Territory Teacher Regulatory Authority as satisfying the requirements of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership 'Accreditation of initial teacher education programs in Australia: Standards and Procedures'; and
- a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education (ITE) program after 1 July 2016 must also demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements (this condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian ITE program completed by the person).

Hallam Secondary College is in Southeast Melbourne on the lands of the Bunurong. Learning communities have flourished on this land for more than 30,000 years. The current College has been on this site since 1971 and has gone through exciting change.

Over the past 4 years;

- HSC reorganised and expanded to cater for growing demand in south-east Melbourne and give families certainty they will have a quality local school for their entire secondary schooling journey.
