Simplifying freight management for Australia and beyond

MachShip is Australia's leading cloud-based freight management platform — and the database is where our product lives. Every shipment, every carrier, every transaction runs through it. We need someone who treats that responsibility seriously.

This isn't a maintenance role. You'll design and deliver tenancy sharding, run the data pipelines, grow the warehouse, and be the engineering authority that every developer comes to when their work touches data. You'll use AI-assisted tooling to move faster and catch more — and you'll bring that same leverage to the team around you.

What You'll Own

Database Performance & Reliability

Own query tuning and performance across SQL Server and PostgreSQL — find what's slow, fix it at the root, keep it fixed

Keep the data layer incident-free: no unplanned data loss, no P1s originating in the database

Use automated and AI-assisted monitoring to surface problems before they become incidents

Tenancy Sharding & Scaling

Design and implement tenancy sharding — move MachShip off large monolithic databases toward smaller, manageable ones

Own the migration end to end, including the rollback plan

Find creative ways to scale databases, including changes at the application layer

Data Pipelines & Warehouse

Run existing pipelines at high uptime — stability first, not rebuilds for their own sake

Expand the data warehouse: grow the catalog and the fields available to the business

Keep the numbers right — the warehouse has to be trustworthy

Be the SQL and data-layer gate for engineering — review PRs for code and SQL changes

Turn that gate into a rapid lane: get good changes into production faster, don't just block bad ones

Build the better version yourself and show developers by example

What Success Looks Like

Tenancy sharding designed, planned and delivered

Database performance problems resolved at your level — not escalated to the Lead

Developers ship data changes faster because of your review, not slower

An expanded data warehouse that covers more of the business than when you arrived

Zero unplanned data loss. Zero P1s that trace back to the data layer

What We're Looking For

Required

- Real-world production database experience — depth that transfers to SQL Server and PostgreSQL
- A genuine engineer who can read and reason about application code — non-negotiable
- Experience with database performance internals: scaling tempdb, indexing, execution plans
- Working knowledge of AWS
- Comfort using AI coding and analysis tools to work faster and catch more
- A passion for scaling infrastructure — you think in systems, not one-off fixes

Nice to Have

- Background in ERP, invoicing/quoting or logistics platforms
- Experience with a database sharding or partitioning migration
- Creative database monitoring, or app-layer changes used to scale a database

Who You Are

You operate as an individual contributor who owns hard problems end to end. You're unafraid to call out a developer in review, and mature enough to do it well. You're low-ego but hold a high technical bar — developers should want your review, not dread it.

The best database engineers are measured by the incidents that never happen and the developers they make better — not just the queries they tune.

We offer flexibility, trust and high standards — and we expect people to bring energy, focus, integrity and ownership. No passengers. We win together when everyone pulls their weight.

Ready to Lead from the Front?
