Visiting Medical Officer –1 day week including on call

An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced General Surgeon to join the Surgical Services team at West Gippsland Healthcare Group (WGHG).

WGHG provides acute, community and aged care services to the Baw Baw Shire and surrounding West Gippsland region. This Visiting Medical Officer position offers the opportunity to provide high-quality elective and emergency general surgical care within a supportive regional health service, while contributing to the education and supervision of junior medical staff.

Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, you will undertake one elective operating list as a VMO, possibility for a private consulting clinic per week and participate in weekly on-call and a one-in-six after-hours on-call weekend roster.

The General Surgery service manages a broad range of low- to moderate-complexity elective and emergency procedures and is classified as a Level 3 hospital for general adult surgical services.

The scope of practice includes, but is not limited to:

- Laparoscopic procedures such as cholecystectomy, appendicectomy, bowel resection.
- Hernia repair (inguinal, femoral and umbilical) including laparoscopic.
- Excision of skin and soft tissue lesions (including naevi, cysts and lipomas)
- Incision and drainage of abscesses
- Thyroid and breast surgery
- Selected emergency procedures, appropriate to local capability

WGHG provides General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), and Obstetrics and Gynaecology services, delivering both elective and emergency surgical care.

Elective operating lists are conducted Monday to Friday.



You will work within a collaborative multidisciplinary team supported by Consultant & GP Anaesthetists, Interns, Residents and Registrars. The Surgical Unit comprises 18 adult inpatient beds dedicated to the care of surgical patients.

Established in 1888, West Gippsland Healthcare Group provides acute medical, surgical, obstetric, emergency, community and aged care services to a primary catchment population of approximately 47,000. Fully accredited by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS), WGHG maintains strong partnerships with regional and metropolitan health services, offering an excellent opportunity to practise high-quality regional surgery while maintaining links with tertiary centres.

Required Skills and Experience

- Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in General Surgery.
- Specialist registration (or eligibility for specialist registration) with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Demonstrated experience in elective and emergency general surgery.
- Experience working within a secondary or tertiary public hospital environment.
- Commitment to multidisciplinary teamwork, clinical governance, quality improvement and the supervision of junior medical staff.
- Current entitlement to work in Australia.

IMPORTANT: Some roles in the healthcare sector are required to be vaccinated annually for Influenza (unless a valid exemption applies).



Evidence of vaccination (or exemption) will be required to be provided prior to commencement.

General surgeons are employed under a Visiting Medical Officer Arrangement.
