We are seeking an experienced Estimator / Scheduler to join our growing team, supporting the delivery of complex steel fabrication and machining projects across defence, resources, and industrial sectors. This is a critical role within our commercial team, responsible for producing accurate, competitive, and commercially sound cost estimates from concept through to tender submission.
You will work closely with engineering, project management, and business development teams to develop pricing strategies that reflect true project costs and support winning bids — including contracts subject to the Australian Government Defence Cost Principles (DCP) .
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed estimates for steel fabrication, structural steel, plate work, and precision machining scopes of work
- Interpret and take off engineering drawings, specifications, bills of materials, and statements of work
- Build and maintain cost models using TCIM (Tender Cost and Integrated Management) software in accordance with project and contract requirements
- Develop direct labour, material, subcontract, overhead, and on-cost components with full supporting rationale
- Prepare and present tender submissions, cost breakdowns, and pricing schedules to internal stakeholders and customers
- Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive quotations for materials, specialist services, and labour hire
- Maintain and update an estimating database of rates, productivity factors, and historical cost data
- Support post-tender reviews and continuous improvement of estimating methodology
- Assist with contract variations, change proposals, and cost-to-complete reviews during project execution
- Collaborate with the project team to identify and quantify risks and contingencies
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum 5 years' estimating experience in steel fabrication, structural steel, and/or precision machining environments
- Demonstrated proficiency with TCIM estimating software — non-negotiable requirement
- Robust ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, machining tolerances, and material specifications
- Sound understanding of fabrication processes including cutting, rolling, bending, welding (MIG, TIG, SAW), surface treatment, and NDT
- Experience estimating machining work including CNC turning, milling, boring, and grinding
- Familiarity with Australian Government Defence Cost Principles and ASDEFCON contract frameworks (highly regarded)
- Ability to identify and price labour, material, subcontract, and overhead cost elements accurately
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel (advanced), Word, and Project
- Strong commercial acumen with the ability to balance competitiveness with margin
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for tender preparation and client interaction
- High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple concurrent tenders to deadline
Qualifications
- Trade qualification in a relevant discipline (boilermaking, fitting & turning, welding, or similar) and/or
- Tertiary qualification in Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or a related field
- Formal estimating training or certification (AIQS, AIPM, or equivalent) is advantageous
- Defence industry contracting environment (ASDEFCON, DMO/CASG procurement)
- Knowledge of AS/NZS welding standards (AS 1554 series), AS 4100, and relevant material standards
- Experience with surface treatment specifications (painting, galvanising, electroplating)
- Familiarity with NDT requirements (UT, MPI, PT, RT) and their cost implications
- Experience using ERP or project management systems (e.g., PRONTO, SAP, JobPac)
