Overview

The Staff Specialist in Cardiothoracic Surgery role at the Royal Hobart Hospital offers a fixed‑term, part‑time, day‑worker position to contribute to a high‑performing team and help shape cardiothoracic surgery services across Tasmania.

About the Department

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery is the sole provider of public cardiothoracic surgical services in Tasmania. It comprises:

- Three full‑time FRACS‑qualified Staff Specialists
- One full‑time Senior Medical Officer
- One RACS trainee
- Two unaccredited registrars
- Two interns
- Dedicated Cardiothoracic Surgery Coordinator and administrative support staff

Services include advanced cardiac and thoracic procedures, minimally invasive surgery, thoracic aortic surgery, statewide outpatient and outreach services via face‑to‑face and telehealth clinics, and care for patients in regional and remote communities.

Role & Responsibilities

- Actively pursue improved outcomes for cardiothoracic surgery patients by participating in teaching and research relevant to the specialty.
- Deliver secure, high‑quality cardiothoracic surgical care to adult patients across elective and acute presentations.
- Contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings, including cardiac surgery case conferences and cross‑specialty planning.
- Support the supervision and development of junior medical staff and surgical trainees.
- Participate in on‑call and after‑hours rostering as required under the Staff Specialist Agreement.

Qualifications & Requirements





- Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
- Full AHPRA registration as a specialist cardiothoracic surgeon.
- Documented evidence of experience in minimally access thoracic surgery.

Eligibility

Essential criteria

- Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty.

Desirable criteria

- AHPRA registration as a cardiothoracic surgeon.

Salary and Benefits

- Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1–Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3: $222,789 – $319,701 per annum, pro‑rata.
- Plus 12% superannuation.
- Salary packaging options including living expenses up to $9,010 and meals and entertainment up to $2,650 per year.
- Motor vehicle allowance of $30,254 per annum, pro‑rata.
- Continuing Career development Allowance of $17,483 per annum, pro‑rata.
