Location

Gosford Hospital is a level 3 Trauma Centre. It is expected that the hospital can manage and stabilise all major trauma patients, transferring those requiring neurosurgical, cardiothoracic or spinal surgery to tertiary facilities. All other patients are admitted locally for ongoing management, tertiary survey and discharge planning.

Role Overview

Trainees will be exposed to post‑acute trauma patient care and are expected to join the other subspecialties in managing and prioritising their ongoing care. They will form part of a multidisciplinary team caring for trauma patients alongside surgical, orthopaedic, ENT, maxillofacial surgery, allied health, ambulance, geriatric and radiology colleagues. Gosford Hospital sees approximately 200 trauma patients per month and admits more than 850 per annum. The term is an ACEM accredited Special Skills Term at 0.5 FTE paired with 0.5 FTE in Emergency Medicine. The trainee should be in the final stage of the FACEM training program, TS3.

Responsibilities

- Involvement in trauma patient care beyond the emergency department to enhance knowledge and skills in this area.
- Delivering education to junior medical staff under the supervision and guidance of the primary supervisor.




- Function as part of a multi‑disciplinary team to review and care for admitted patients alongside surgical colleagues.
- Quality improvement in patient care, including preparation and attendance at Morbidity and Mortality meetings; complete at least one audit/research project during the term.
- Participation in interdepartmental meetings and the trauma service’s educational sessions such as Trauma Team Training, Chest Drain Workshop and the PARTY program.
- Work alongside trauma service staff to ensure valuable trauma patient care from ED to discharge and beyond, continually striving to improve patient care and experience.
- Usual emergency medicine registrar role expectations when performing ED 0.5 FTE.

Additional Expectations

The successful applicant will have a roster primarily written around the SSP, with clinical ED shifts adapted accordingly. They are to report to the trauma office daily when on shift and will meet with their supervisor fortnightly. A logbook will be provided during orientation and is expected to be completed by the end of the term; it will be reviewed ad hoc during the term.
