New graduates or early career therapists (Range 3)

Western Autistic School requires two full-time Speech Pathologist (part-time also considered, minimum of three days).

These positions are based in Laverton which is in close proximity to the freeway for easy access.

The Role:

The Speech Pathology service at Western Autistic School is a consultancy service for teachers. Each Speech Pathologist has a caseload of classrooms which they visit weekly. Speech Pathologists work directly with all students,



(either 1:1 or in small groups), on a rotational basis. This is to monitor their progress with their Individual Learning Plan communication goals and also to model strategies to teaching staff. Therapists then provide strategies and recommendations to the teaching staff as to how they can best support each student’s communication and language development in the classroom. The philosophy of the Speech Pathology team is to ensure all of the students develop functional, independent communication skills, and as such, we have a strong focus on the development of pragmatic language and social interaction skills.

Key Selection Criteria:

- SC1 Experience in providing speech and language therapy to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder or developmental delays, particularly in the area of pragmatic language development.
- SC2 Knowledge and experience of the use of a range of Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) systems, encompassing both low-technology and high-technology systems.
- SC3 Demonstrated capacity to work in collaboration with teaching teams to devise programs that extend a student's functional communication and social skills in a range of contexts.
- SC4 Demonstrated ability to work as part of a collaborative multi-disciplinary professional team.
- SC5 Highly developed interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills including demonstrated sensitivity to family issues in special education

Applicants must be eligible for Speech Pathology Australia membership andhold a current Working With Children Check and Police Check.
