About the role Canva is seeking a developer to improve the accessibility of its flagship design platform. You will focus on building inclusive interactions within the Editor and guiding other engineering teams to implement high-standard accessibility features.

- Team: Editing Accessibility team (within the Design Experience supergroup and Editing Group)
What you'll do
- Develop and maintain accessible interactions for the Editor, including focus management, keyboard navigation, and live regions.
- Utilize screen readers like VoiceOver, NVDA, and JAWS as a primary development and debugging tool.
- Partner with engineers across the Editing Group to provide technical guidance, review pull requests, and audit designs.
- Architect systemic solutions to address recurring accessibility gaps rather than applying temporary fixes.
- Collaborate with assistive technology users to co-design and validate features.
Requirements
- Commercial experience building accessible web applications with a practical understanding of WCAG standards.
- Proficiency in TypeScript and React.
- Ability to navigate and contribute to large, complex frontend codebases.
- Experience using screen readers to debug and test technical inconsistencies.
- Strong communication skills to explain accessibility requirements to designers and engineers.
Nice to have
- Knowledge of WAI-ARIA authoring patterns for complex widgets like grids, trees, and drag-and-drop interfaces.
- Experience with real-time UI accessibility, HTML5 canvas, data visualization, or WYSIWYG editors.
- Familiarity with browser accessibility APIs and the accessibility tree.
- Experience implementing accessibility features using AI or working with mobile accessibility and React Native.
- Prior collaboration with accessibility specialists or user researchers.
