A formative role in a new independent cultural organisation

The Third Brim is an independent cultural organisation currently being established in Fitzroy.

Dedicated to ideas, creativity, learning and exchange, Its program will bring together artists, writers, educators, thinkers and facilitators through talks, discussions, workshops, classes and small-scale cultural events. The aim is to create a thoughtful, distinctive and welcoming place where people can encounter new ideas, develop skills and participate in meaningful cultural experiences.

The Third Brim is now moving from concept to operation. We are seeking an Arts Program Coordinator to play a central role in developing its program, establishing its working practices and building its relationships with artists, collaborators and audiences.

This is an unusual opportunity to join a new organisation at its formative stage and make a substantial contribution to its identity, direction and public life.

The position

Working closely with the founder, the Arts Program Coordinator will develop, coordinate and deliver The Third Brim’s public program.

The position combines cultural programming, artist and facilitator liaison, event production, communications and practical administration. It requires someone who can recognise compelling ideas and collaborators, build constructive relationships, and carry a program from initial concept through to successful delivery.

The successful candidate will have meaningful scope to propose events, identify opportunities, establish partnerships and influence how The Third Brim develops.

Key responsibilities

- research and develop a varied program of talks, workshops, classes, discussions and cultural events;
- identify and approach artists, writers, educators, speakers, teachers and facilitators;
- develop programming proposals in collaboration with the founder;
- build and maintain positive relationships with participating artists, presenters and partner organisations;
- coordinate event schedules, fees, agreements, access requirements and practical arrangements;

- manage events from initial planning through to delivery and evaluation;
- prepare and maintain event information, booking pages and relevant website content;
- plan and coordinate social media, newsletters and other promotional material;
- respond to program and participant enquiries;
- establish practical administrative systems for bookings, contacts, schedules and program records;
- identify opportunities for partnerships, audience development and community engagement; and
- contribute to the continuing development of The Third Brim’s identity, priorities and future program.

About you

We are looking for someone who combines cultural curiosity with strong organisational ability.

You will be comfortable moving between ideas and practical delivery: discussing a possible event with an artist or speaker, preparing a program proposal, coordinating a schedule, publishing event information and ensuring that the event itself runs well.

You will ideally have:

- a strong and informed interest in contemporary arts, culture and ideas;
- excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- the ability to establish productive and respectful relationships with artists, presenters and collaborators;
- the ability to coordinate events or projects from initial concept through to delivery;
- sound judgement, initiative and the ability to work independently;
- robust organisational skills and close attention to detail;
- confidence managing websites, booking systems, mailing platforms and social media;
- the ability to balance creative ambition with practical constraints; and
- enthusiasm for contributing to a current and evolving organisation.

experience in arts programming, cultural events, festivals, galleries, education, public programs or a related field would be welcome,

but is not essential;

Relevant qualifications in Arts Management, Curatorship, Cultural Management, Creative Producing, Events or a related discipline would be valuable but are not essential where equivalent experience can be demonstrated.

The role is particularly suited to an emerging arts coordinator who can demonstrate the judgement, initiative and capability to take meaningful responsibility for the program. It may also appeal to a more experienced arts coordinator or producer seeking a substantive part-time position.

Why The Third Brim?

- influence the direction of a new independent cultural organisation;
- originate and develop programs rather than simply administer an established calendar;
- work directly with a wide range of artists, speakers, educators and facilitators;
- develop new partnerships and build an audience from the beginning;
- work with considerable autonomy in close collaboration with the founder; and
- contribute to creating a distinctive cultural space in Fitzroy.

The organisation is in its formative stage, so the position will suit someone who enjoys taking initiative, solving problems and establishing effective structures and ways of working.

Employment conditions

This is a permanent part-time employment position of between 20 and 24 hours per week. The final number and arrangement of hours will be agreed with the successful candidate during the recruitment process.

The position will be based primarily at The Third Brim in Fitzroy, with flexibility for some work to be undertaken from home.

Some evening and occasional weekend work will be required because of the nature of the program. Wherever practicable, these hours will form part of the employee’s agreed ordinary working hours, with corresponding flexibility in daytime hours.

The salary is $95,000–$115,000 full time equivalent, plus superannuation, paid pro rata according to the agreed hours and depending on experience and demonstrated capability.

This equates to an actual annual salary of approximately:
