About the role Flagship Pioneering is on the lookout for an Operating Principal to become a key player in the Summit Pioneering Business Unit. This role is pivotal in steering the establishment and expansion of new enterprises, with a strong emphasis on operational strategy and corporate development. The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with scientific leaders to translate groundbreaking ideas into successful business initiatives.

What you'll do

- Spearhead the strategic and operational planning for one or more emerging companies within the Summit PBU.
- Drive corporate development initiatives, which include forming partnerships, securing funding, and managing relationships with the Board of Directors and other key stakeholders.
- Partner with scientists and company executives to ensure that operational goals align with scientific advancements.
- Recruit, mentor, and manage high-performing teams across diverse functions to foster a culture of excellence.
- Collaborate with Flagship's central teams, including Finance, Talent Acquisition, Legal/IP, and Human Resources, to build and implement robust infrastructure for each new venture.
- Formulate and execute operational and long-term strategies, ensuring that project milestones are achieved on time and within financial constraints.
- Build and maintain strong external relationships with investors, partners, and influential opinion leaders in the industry.




- Analyze market trends and competitive landscapes to inform strategic decisions and identify growth opportunities for the companies under your purview.
- Develop and implement key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor progress and drive accountability across teams.
- Facilitate communication and collaboration among cross-functional teams to ensure seamless execution of business objectives.
- Engage in regular assessments of operational processes to identify areas for improvement and implement best practices.
- Act as a representative of Flagship Pioneering at industry conferences and events, promoting the company's vision and initiatives.

Requirements

- A minimum of 10 years of experience in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or life sciences sectors, with a strong focus on strategy and operations; experience in management consulting is a plus.
- Proven success in leadership roles related to strategic, operational, or corporate development, ideally within early-stage biotech companies.
- Strong scientific acumen, with the capability to quickly grasp and apply new scientific concepts in operational contexts.
- A demonstrated history of building and inspiring high-performance teams.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to influence and inspire various stakeholders, including investors and internal teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills,



with a talent for creating structure from complexity and rapidly iterating towards effective solutions.
- An entrepreneurial spirit characterized by resilience and a proactive approach; willing to engage in all facets of the work to drive progress.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while managing multiple priorities effectively.

Nice to have

- An advanced degree in life sciences or business (PhD, MD, MBA, or equivalent experience) is preferred.
- Previous experience in a startup environment, particularly in biotech or life sciences.
- Familiarity with fundraising processes and investor relations in the biotech sector.
- Experience in developing and implementing operational frameworks for new ventures.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements and compliance in the biotechnology industry.

- The compensation for this position ranges from $220,000 to $269,500, with the final salary determined by various factors such as the candidate's qualifications, skills, and experience.
