The Opportunity
Are you a detail-driven finance professional who takes pride in getting the numbers right? We are seeking an experienced Payroll Officer/Assistant Accountant to join our Finance team in Epping or Echuca branch, reporting to the Finance Manager. In this hands‑on role, you will be responsible for end-to-end payroll, supplier and other payments, insurance claims and vehicle administration, and general journals, balance sheet reconciliations and month-end reporting. Key Responsibilities:
Process weekly end‑to‑end payroll, including timesheet review, shift rates, overtime and allowances, and run the payroll process in Definitiv.
Maintain employee payroll records, pay rates and superannuation, in line with the current Enterprise Agreement and relevant Awards.
Calculate and prepare monthly and annual payroll tax, process WorkCover and terminations, and manage annual and long‑service leave provisions.
Prepare and post payroll and general journals, including accruals, prepayments and lease journals, in the accounting system.
Prepare payment runs twice weekly,
reconcile credit card statements and maintain direct debit payments for insurance, WorkCover, rent and utilities.
Maintain vehicle‑related administration, including registrations, fuel cards and toll accounts for the fleet.
Collate and follow up motor vehicle insurance claims through to resolution.
Maintain the fixed assets register, prepare monthly depreciation and reconcile month‑end balances.
Prepare BAS statements for review and assist with GST compliance.
Support ad hoc finance tasks including cross‑charge reporting, budgeting assistance and covering the Accounts Receivable Officer or Finance Assistant during leave.
About You:
Certificate IV in Accounting & Bookkeeping, Diploma in Payroll Services, Certificate III in Accounts Administration, or a relevant qualification.
Experience in end‑to‑end payroll processing, including payment runs and uploading payments to banking platforms.
Experience posting cash and general journals, such as prepayments, payroll accruals and lease journals.
Knowledge of statutory payroll obligations, including superannuation, PAYG, Single Touch Payroll reporting and payroll tax.
Familiarity with the Storage Services Wholesale Award, Retail Award and Clerk Award, along with relevant payroll legislation.
Sound knowledge of accounting principles, with well‑developed analytical and problem‑solving skills.
High‑level numeracy and reconciliation skills, with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
Exposure to Definitiv (payroll) and/or Nexus (accounting) is desirable but not essential.
Experience in the Food Services or Distribution industry is highly regarded.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to liaise professionally with staff at all levels.
Well organised, able to manage deadlines and work confidently with minimal supervision.
Willingness to work an early or late start when required to run End of Day, End of Month and End of Year processes.
