About the role
Flagship Pioneering, Inc. is seeking an Operating Principal to play a crucial role in the initiation and expansion of our NewCos. This position involves overseeing operational strategies and initiatives across various companies, working in close collaboration with scientific leaders to convert innovative ideas into successful outcomes. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in biotech or life sciences and a proven ability to lead teams effectively.

What you'll do
- Lead the strategic and operational planning processes for one or more NewCos, ensuring alignment with overall business goals.
- Drive corporate development initiatives, which include forming partnerships, securing funding, and creating strategic alliances, while actively engaging with the Board of Directors and other key stakeholders.
- Work closely with scientists and executive teams to ensure that technical advancements are in sync with operational objectives and market needs.
- Recruit, mentor, and guide high-performing teams across various functional areas to foster a culture of excellence and innovation.
- Collaborate with Flagship's central teams, including Finance, Talent Acquisition, Legal/IP, and HR, to establish robust operational frameworks for each NewCo.
- Formulate and implement operational and long-term strategic plans, ensuring that all milestones are achieved within budgetary constraints and timelines.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders, including investors, partners, and influential leaders in the biotech sector.
- Analyze market trends and competitive landscapes to inform strategic decisions and operational improvements.
- Facilitate cross-functional collaboration to enhance project execution and drive company performance.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of NewCos, providing insights and recommendations for continuous improvement.
- Represent the company at industry events and conferences to enhance visibility and foster networking opportunities.
- Champion a culture of innovation and accountability within the organization, inspiring teams to pursue excellence.
Requirements
- An advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or a related field is required.
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in the biotech, pharmaceutical, or life sciences sectors, focusing on strategy, operations, or program management.
- Experience in management consulting is a plus, providing a strong foundation for strategic thinking.
- A proven track record of leadership in strategic, operational, or corporate development roles, particularly in early-stage biotech companies.
- Strong scientific acumen with the ability to quickly grasp new scientific developments and translate them into actionable strategies.
- Demonstrated success in building and leading high-performing teams, fostering a collaborative and results-oriented environment.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to influence and motivate diverse stakeholders, including investors and internal teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, capable of navigating complex challenges and developing effective solutions.
- An entrepreneurial mindset, characterized by resilience and a proactive approach to driving initiatives forward.

- Familiarity with regulatory processes and compliance in the life sciences industry.

- Previous experience in a startup setting,

Practical notes

- Flagship Pioneering offers a competitive salary range of $220,000 to $269,500, with total compensation dependent on various factors, including qualifications and experience.
