We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Apprentice Stonemason to join the Victorian Stonemason Co-operative in Melbourne. This is a full-time apprenticeship position offering you the opportunity to learn a traditional craft whilst working on diverse and rewarding projects across Melbourne and Victoria. As an apprentice, you will develop comprehensive skills in stonework under the mentorship of experienced tradespeople, gaining hands-on experience in one of the building trades' most respected disciplines. This role is fundamental to your pathway towards becoming a qualified stonemason and contributing to the preservation and creation of architectural heritage throughout Victoria.

Key responsibilities

- Assisting experienced stonemasons in preparing, shaping and installing stone for buildings, monuments and architectural features
- Learning and practising cutting, dressing and finishing stone using both traditional hand tools and modern equipment
- Measuring, marking and laying out stone work in accordance with specifications and design requirements
- Mixing and applying mortar and other bonding materials correctly
- Maintaining a safe and tidy work environment, adhering to all health and safety standards and regulations
- Transporting and handling stone and materials safely and efficiently
- Assisting with the maintenance and care of tools and equipment
- Attending accredited apprenticeship training courses and completing required theoretical work
- Developing knowledge of different stone types, their properties and appropriate applications
- Supporting the team to meet project deadlines and quality standards

What we're looking for

- A genuine passion for traditional craftsmanship and working with stone
- Physical fitness and capability to perform demanding manual labour, including lifting and repetitive tasks
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and attention to detail
- Strong work ethic and reliability,



with the ability to arrive on time and maintain consistent attendance
- Willingness to learn and take direction from experienced tradespeople
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Basic mathematical skills for measuring and calculating
- A valid VIT (Victorian Institute of Trades) apprenticeship registration or willingness to register
- Current Victorian driver's licence (desirable)
- Completion of Year 10 or equivalent education (or equivalent life experience)
- A commitment to workplace health and safety practices
