Pyrenees Hay Australia
is a leading Australian exporter specialising in oaten hay and cereal straw export to global markets.
We are seeking a practical, hands-on operator to join our team in a hybrid role that supports both our Victorian grower network and our export packing operations in Avoca Victoria.
About the Role
This position operates across field, supply, and site-based operations, ensuring a consistent flow of high-quality hay (and straw) from paddock through to export processing.
You will work directly with growers while also contributing on-site in quality control, inventory management, and some logistics coordination.
This is not a purely office-based role—it is suited to someone comfortable working in the paddock and in an operational environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Hay Procurement & Grower Engagement
- Build and maintain strong relationships with growers
- Source, test, evaluate, document and purchase hay /straw in line with export specifications.
- Inspect crops to assess yield, quality potential, paddock contamination etc.
- Identify and develop new grower supply opportunities
- Quality Control (Site-Based)
- Assess incoming hay and straw against purchase specifications and assign into grades
- Monitor quality indicators including moisture, colour, stem thickness, and any contamination
- Work with operations staff to maintain export-quality standards
- Supply & Logistics Coordination
- Assist with planning and coordinating delivery of hay to site
- Support scheduling and supply flow to meet processing requirements
- Work closely with management on supply planning
- Operations & Administration
- Assist with hay stocktakes and inventory tracking
- Maintain accurate grower, purchase, and product records
- Support general site functions as required
About You
- Background in agriculture, cropping, forage, or a related industry
- Practical experience with hay or fodder production and quality assessment
- A self-starter with a strong work ethic and a natural drive to stay productive
- Ability to negotiate commercially sound, mutually beneficial outcomes with growers under management guidance.
- Solid attention to detail and sound practical decision-making ability
- Well-developed communication and organisational skills
- Microsoft Excel
- Cloud-based systems (e.g. Dropbox)
- General record-keeping and reporting tools
- Comfortable working across field, site, and office environments
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently
- OK to travel for up to a few days at a time.
This role requires an existing, working understanding of hay and forage systems.
While further skills will be developed on the job, applicants should already be capable of making practical, common-sense quality assessments with confidence.
Why Join PHA?
- Diverse, hands-on role across field and operational environments
- Opportunity to be part of a growing export-focused agribusiness
- Direct involvement in the full supply chain—from paddock to export
- Long-term career development within the forage sector
Remuneration
- Base salary of $80,000 – $110,000 + superannuation, depending on experience
- Company Ute, mobile phone, laptop, and hay testing equipment provided
- Lucrative per-tonne bonus structure, with the ability and expectation to increase total earnings by up to 50% on top of the base salary (quite achievable for high performers)
- Opportunities for interstate travel.
- Potential for international travel to meet clients and develop a deeper understanding of export quality requirements
