National Technical Development Manager - Steel Industry Body

Our client, the Australian Steel Institute (ASI), is Australia’s peak body representing the steel supply chain from manufacturing through to end users. It is a member-based organisation and is looking for a talented National Technical Development Manager to join their team.

The focus of the role will be to lead, plan and manage the technical and educational services and lead technical support for associated Australian Standards committee’s and compliance programs, for both ASI and NASH (National Association of Steel Framed Housing).

This is a member facing role that requires engagement with various stakeholders in the steel industry, as well as technical knowledge in associated engineering, standards and compliance systems for both hot-rolled steel and steelwork and light gauge / cold formed steel framing.

In this role you will be responsible for:

- Development and coordination of business plan objectives related to technical education
- Strategic technical planning regarding standards development and compliance solutions
- Technical content development for Technical Notes, eLearning, best practice guidance, website and marketing
- Technical committee management including the Compliance Technical Advisory committee, NASH Standards committee, Bushfire committee, Energy Efficiency committee, and Mid-rise committee
- Technical support for Steelwork Compliance Australia and Steel Sustainability Australia
- Management of, and liaising with, external stakeholders in relation to technical issues, information and enquiries




- Preparation and delivery of technical presentations to various stakeholders, including by way of webinars and face to face delivery
- Provision of regular updates and reports to the business, and management of related budget

To be successful in his role you will ideally have:

- 5+ years of relevant steel or related industry experience
- A strong general knowledge of the steel supply chain
- Technical expertise in both hot-rolled steel/steelwork and light gauge steel framing or related fields
- Strong knowledge of Australian Standards, building regulations and industry codes (NCC)
- Experience in managing technical committees, and working in Standards Committees and with government regulators and industry bodies
- Demonstrated experience in developing relationships with universities
- A bachelor’s degree qualification in civil/structural engineering
- A higher degree in engineering is desirable but not essential
- Eligibility for qualified membership of Engineers Australia
- Leadership experience in managing staff and/or small teams
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal), report writing and presentation skills
- Strong internal and external stakeholder management skills and ability to work effectively with people at all levels
- Budgeting, planning and project management skills
- Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)

This is a full-time position. A hybrid work from office/work from home arrangement is available.

The position is ideally based in Sydney, however suitable candidates from other locations within Australia will be considered. It offers an attractive remuneration package and is a fantastic opportunity to join an organisation with strong values and a highly professional team and work environment.
