About the Role
Hunter Valley Grammar School seeks to appoint a permanent full-time (1.0 FTE) Head of Curriculum Years 11 - 12 to our Senior School commencing in Term 1, 2027.
The Head of Curriculum Years 11-12 is a senior leadership role with the primary function to work with the Principal, Director of Teaching and Learning, the Head of Senior School and other Heads of Curriculum to lead the implementation, monitoring, evaluation and development of the HVGS learning program.
The Head of Curriculum Years 11-12 has primary responsibility for the implementation of the Higher School Certificate (HSC), International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, and the IB Career-related Programme. The Head of Curriculum Years 11-12 will work closely with the Heads of Faculty and Heads of House to ensure learning in Years 11 and 12 is underpinned by HVGS’s definition of high-quality teaching and learning.
Work Pattern: This position is to be on campus from 8:00 am until at least 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday, each school day in accordance with the published term dates. Staff meetings and other avenues for collaboration require attendance beyond 4:00pm. The teaching load for this position will be determined at the time of appointment.
Key Duties
- Working collaboratively with other members of the Teaching and Learning Leadership Team to gather information, analyse data and make decisions to maximise individual student outcomes Years 11-12.
- Leadership, oversight and management of curriculum, assessment and reporting in all Year 11 and 12 subjects, including the development of assessment planners.
- Promoting a deep understanding of the HVGS approach to teaching and learning through information and workshop sessions for a variety of audiences including staff, students and parents.
- Encouraging the implementation of innovative practices by departments within the scope of the Years 11 and 12 curricula.
- Taking responsibility for effective policies, practices and procedures for teaching and learning in Years 11–12, including those related to pedagogy, homework, assessment and reporting.
- Guiding and supporting HOFs with development of curriculum materials, allocation of time, opportunities, resources and text selections.
- Working closely with the Head of Senior School and Heads of House on the transition of students from Years 10 into 11, and into the world of work and/or university life, including advising individuals and cohorts,
on course selection based on future career and study choices.
- Leading high quality staff professional learning that model’s quality pedagogical principles in practice.
- In collaboration with the Director of Teaching and Learning, Heads of Curriculum and Head of Professional Learning, planning and promoting HSC and IB training offered at HVGS and through external providers.
- Working collaboratively with the Director of Teaching and Learning and the Heads of Curriculum to map the curriculum (including approaches to teaching and learning, the Learner Profiles and international mindedness) from ELC to Year 12 to ensure continuity of curriculum development and delivery within and across the schools.
- Leading approaches to differentiation by modelling it in action and holding teams to account for ensuring all learners can access the learning in every classroom.
- Supporting the Heads of Student Services, GAT Coordinator and Heads of Faculty with developing programmes of enrichment and support in all key learning areas.
- Working closely with the Library and Information Services staff, and ICT team, to foster information and digital literacy skills.
- Work closely with the Futures and Careers Coordinator to ensure that the DP and CP are included in the HVGS Futures and Careers program planning.
- Collaborating with the Head of Co-curriculum and Head of Curriculum 7-10 to ensure the Co-Curriculum program and other activities are integrated appropriately into the holistic curriculum provided to students.
- Leading school communication and curriculum events as needed; including written documents and evening events.
- Mentoring and managing of Heads of Faculty, with a focus on helping to ensure a proactive approach to the development of classroom practice, curriculum and assessment procedures.
Operational Leadership
- Monitoring ACARA/NESA/BOSTES compliance and ensuring accreditation requirements are met in Years 11 and 12, including preparation of all academic requirements for Registration and Accreditation process.
- Promote the use of the MyIB portal within the school community.
- Supervise the delivery and development of the IB DP and CP Core (CAS, TOK, EE, RP, CE etc.).
- Provide after-exam support for students and families e.g. advise on enquiries on results, re-marks etc.
- Overseeing online and/or Distance Education learning opportunities for students in Years 11 and 12, including the oversight of external course providers and programs (e.g. TAFE, Camden Haven Distance Education, NSW School of Languages etc.).
- Leading the development of the academic timetable including subject scheduling and sequencing, teacher allocation and student requirements to maximise teaching and learning outcomes, in consultation with the Timetabling Coordinator and Head of Curriculum Years 7-10.
- Providing and maintaining appropriate records and data in conjunction with the Head of Curriculum Years 7-10 to produce periodic reports that demonstrate the effectiveness of curriculum programs, pedagogy, assessment and reporting.
- Scheduling Year 11 and 12 curriculum-related activities in consultation with the Head of Operations in such a way as to maximise continuity of learning and minimize disruptions.
- Planning subject selection processes for Year 10 into 11 and preparing documentation for credentialed pathways in Years 11 and 12.
- Oversight of all aspects of the HSC and IB Examination periods liaising with the appointed Presiding Officer, NESA and the IB.
- Preparing, managing and monitoring the annual Years 11-12 Curriculum budget.
- Oversight of senior VET courses and student placements in Years 11 and 12.
- Oversight of the School’s NESA School’s Online portal and associated requirements for HSC and the student’s ROSA.
- Inducting and mentoring new HVGS Senior School staff in IB pedagogical practices.
- The Head of Curriculum Years 11 - 12 will teach a small number of classes in the Senior School at the discretion of the Principal.
- Other duties as required and appropriate to the role.
About You
- Relevant teaching qualification and current NESA accreditation.
- Demonstrated experience in curriculum leadership and knowledge and a passion for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programmes is essential.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high achieving staff and students.
- Experience in managing, training, coaching and mentoring staff in a multi-disciplinary environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning.
- Sensitivity to cultural nuances, a commitment to inclusion an active advocate for diversity.
- Ability to integrate technology and a good understanding of how it can be leveraged to enhance both teaching and learning.

- Responsibility for managing one’s own annual accreditation requirements including fee payment and maintenance of a current Working with Children Check (WWCC) clearance.
