Position Overview
We are seeking a qualified and client-focused Accountant to join our public practice team. You will manage a portfolio of clients, prepare financial statements and tax returns, and provide practical, high-quality advice and compliance services. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys variety, values accuracy, and wants to grow within a firm that is investing in its people and systems. This is a full-time role located at our offices in Ballarat, Victoria.
Key Responsibilities The core of the role, requiring technical expertise, professional judgement, and regulatory compliance:
- Manage a client portfolio, building strong rapport through face-to-face, phone, and video consultations.
- Prepare and complete Business Activity Statements (BAS) and Instalment Activity Statements (IAS)
- Prepare and lodge Individual, Company, Trust, and Partnership tax returns
- Prepare Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) returns
- Prepare end-of-year financial statements
- Complete tax planning and trust distribution resolutions
- Prepare workpapers and spreadsheets in support of clients' source documents
- Perform Xero organisation reconciliations for GST, PAYG Withholding, and PAYG Instalments
- Perform Xero and manual (paper) bank reconciliations
- Set up and maintain asset registers
- Assist with chattel mortgage set-up and new business structure set-up/registration
- Apply for TFNs and ABNs via the Australian Business Register
- Assist clients with compliance matters relating to PAYG, GST, WorkCover, Superannuation, Centrelink, and other tax matters
- Support business development activities
- Maintain relevant certifications (e.g. CPA/CA, Xero) and undertake ongoing CPD and training to stay current with tax law and regulations
- Delegate tasks and provide guidance to administration, bookkeeping, or junior accounting team members as required
- Incidental general and administrative tasks
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting
- CPA or CA qualification
- Previous experience in a public practice accounting environment
- Sound working knowledge of Australian tax law and compliance obligations
- Proficiency in Xero accounting software
- Robust attention to detail, time management, and organisational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A collaborative, proactive approach and willingness to support junior team members
