The Role

We are keen to connect with General Surgery Registrars interested in joining a major regional referral hospital in Victoria. This role offers broad exposure across general surgery within a busy surgical service, working alongside experienced consultant surgeons and multidisciplinary teams in a well-established regional training environment. The department manages a diverse surgical workload, including acute general surgery through the Emergency Department alongside elective operating lists. Registrars gain experience across multiple subspecialty services while contributing to inpatient care, perioperative management, outpatient clinics and on-call commitments. Opportunities are available in both accredited and unaccredited registrar positions depending on the recruitment round and eligibility.

The Hospital

This major regional referral health service provides comprehensive specialist care across a large catchment and is one of Victoria's leading regional teaching hospitals.

- Approximately 700 inpatient beds.
- More than 45,000 inpatient admissions annually.
- Over 65,000 Emergency Department presentations each year.
- More than 15,000 operations performed annually.
- Extensive specialist services supporting a broad surgical case mix across the region.

Training & Development

Training is a key feature of this position, with registrars working within an established surgical education program.

- Exposure across General Surgery and subspecialty services including colorectal, breast, upper GI, thoracic, head and neck, paediatric surgery, plastics and ERCP services.




- Regular multidisciplinary meetings including Head & Neck, Thoracic and Pathology MDTs.
- Weekly surgical teaching and journal club.
- Weekly surgical audit meetings.
- Close consultant supervision within a high-volume regional surgical service.
- Accredited registrar positions are available through rotations from metropolitan training networks, alongside unaccredited registrar opportunities. Accreditation and eligibility depend on the individual position.

Requirements

- Eligible for registration with AHPRA.
- Recent experience in General Surgery at registrar or senior resident level.
