Communications Consultant: Sydney
Elexia Communications is looking for a seriously bright early-career communications professional to join our Sydney team.
We advise some of Australia’s most interesting energy and infrastructure businesses on communications, media, reputation and the issues that matter when projects, companies and executives are under scrutiny.
We’re looking for someone who is smart, curious, ambitious and wants to learn the craft properly.
You might already be working in PR, communications, journalism, public affairs or media. You’ll probably have around 1–3 years’ experience.
What matters more is that you can write, think and learn.
You’ll work across social media, media monitoring and reporting, content, media relations, research and client communications.
But that is where you’ll start, not where we expect you to stay.
We want someone who can develop into a genuinely good communications consultant.
The work
You’ll
- Monitor news, media and industry developments and work out what actually matters
- Produce concise, intelligent media reporting for clients
- Create strong social content, particularly for LinkedIn
- Draft media releases, articles, briefings and executive communications
- Research companies, competitors, policy and emerging issues
- Support media pitching and deal directly with journalists as your experience grows
- Work on campaigns, announcements and major projects
- Sit in on client discussions and learn how communications strategy is actually developed
- Get exposure to issues and reputation management when things become complicated
Some days you’ll be writing a social post.
Other days you might be helping work out what a CEO should say when a journalist calls with a difficult question.
That breadth is part of the job.
The person
We’re looking for someone who:
- Writes exceptionally well
- Is interested in news, business and the world around them
- Has good instincts about what is interesting and important
- Notices details other people miss
- Can take a brief and run with it
- Asks good questions
- Likes responsibility
- Has an opinion, but is willing to change it
- Wants their work to be genuinely valuable
Energy experience is useful but absolutely not essential. We can teach you energy.
We can teach you media strategy, issues management and the darker arts of communications.
What is harder to teach is curiosity, judgement and drive.
Why Elexia?
Because you’ll get close to the work.
You’ll work alongside senior communications people and directly with clients. You’ll see the thinking behind the advice, not just be handed tasks after the decisions have been made.
If you show you can do something, you’ll get more of it.
If you’re capable of sitting in a client meeting, you’ll sit in the client meeting.
If you can deal with a journalist, you’ll deal with the journalist.
If you can contribute to the strategy, we’ll expect you to contribute to the strategy.
We have high standards and we care about the quality of the work.
We also want people to enjoy coming to work, have a point of view and become better at what they do.
If you’re looking for somewhere to build a serious communications career, we’d like to meet you.
- Send us your CV and a short note telling us why you’re interested — and tell us something about yourself we won’t find on your CV.
