Role Description The Community Archivist is a full-time, on-site role based in Hobart, TAS. This role is responsible for working with communities to identify, collect, and preserve records that document Tasmania’s social, cultural, and historical experiences. Day-to-day tasks include assessing and describing archival materials, creating finding aids, and ensuring proper storage and handling of physical and digital collections.
The Community
Archivist will plan and deliver outreach activities, workshops, and community projects that encourage the donation, sharing, and interpretation of local histories.
The role also involves collaborating with colleagues across Libraries Tasmania, supporting reference and research services, and contributing to digital access initiatives and public programs.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated skills in archival practice, including appraisal, description, preservation, and collection management.
- Experience in community engagement, outreach, and collaboration with diverse stakeholder groups.
- Solid research, information management, and documentation skills relevant to library and archival settings.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present information clearly to different audiences.
- Ability to work effectively in teams, build relationships, and contribute to inclusive, culturally safe services.
- Sound digital literacy, including familiarity with collection management systems and basic digital preservation concepts.
- Relevant tertiary qualification in archives, records management, library and information studies, history, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Interest in Tasmanian history, culture, and communities, and a commitment to ethical, non-discriminatory archival practice.
