We specialise in polishing and decorative chrome plating for automotive, motorcycle and small truck parts, as well as lures, custom machined parts and a range of specialist metal components.
This role is available on a full-time or part-time basis and would suit someone who takes pride in producing high-quality, consistent finishes. Wage is negotiable for the right candidate, based on experience and ability.
We are looking for an autonomous, reliable and highly disciplined person with strong practical skills in metal preparation, polishing and finishing. Experience with chrome plating preparation is highly desirable, although on-the-job training may be provided for candidates with the right attitude and workshop ability.
About the Role
You will be responsible for preparing a wide range of metal components for plating, chroming and final finishing. This includes working with old and new parts made from steel, mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, alloy, die-cast, brass, copper and nickel where applicable.
You will use large floor-mounted pedestal linishing and polishing machines, polishing lathes, sanders, buffing machines and smaller hand-held tools to achieve smooth, reflective and consistent finishes ready for decorative chrome plating.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare metal surfaces for plating, chroming or final finishing by grinding, sanding, linishing, polishing and buffing components to the required standard.
- Remove scratches, pitting, weld marks, oxidation,
blemishes and other surface imperfections from metal parts.
- Select and use appropriate polishing compounds, abrasives, wheels, belts, mops and hand tools for different metals and finishes.
- Operate polishing lathes, pedestal grinders, linishers, sanders, buffing machines and other workshop equipment safely and effectively.
- Inspect components before and after polishing to ensure quality, consistency, smoothness and suitability for plating or chroming.
- Work from job cards, customer instructions, samples, drawings or supervisor and management directions to achieve the required finish.
- Protect critical surfaces, threads, holes and edges during preparation and finishing work.
- Assist with cleaning, degreasing, masking, racking, packing and general metal finishing tasks when required.
- Identify defects, damage or issues that may affect the final finish and report concerns before processing continues.
- Maintain tools, equipment and work areas in a clean, secure and organised condition.
- Follow workplace procedures for quality control, chemical awareness, manual handling, dust control, noise control and protected machine operation.
- Support production targets while maintaining workmanship, safety and customer quality standards.
Skills, Experience and Attributes
- Previous experience in metal polishing, metal finishing, plating, chroming,
fabrication, restoration or a similar workshop environment is desirable.
- Ability to produce smooth, reflective and consistent finishes on metal components.
- Good understanding of polishing techniques, surface preparation and defect removal.
- Confident use of hand tools, power tools and polishing equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and pride in workmanship.
- Ability to follow instructions, job cards and production priorities.
- Sound awareness of workshop safety, PPE, dust, noise and manual handling risks.
- Physically capable of standing for extended periods and handling metal parts safely.
- Reliable, punctual and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to learn plating, chroming and broader metal finishing processes.
Qualifications and Training
- Formal trade qualifications are not always required, although relevant training in engineering, fabrication, manufacturing, surface finishing or metal trades will be highly regarded.
- On-the-job training may be provided for candidates with strong practical ability and a good safety attitude.
- Forklift licence, manual handling training, hazardous chemical awareness or first aid training may be advantageous.
- Australian work rights are required.
What We Offer
- Full-time opportunity available.
- Negotiable wage for the right candidate.
- Hands-on workshop role with a busy and established chrome plating business.
- Opportunity to develop further skills in plating, chroming and specialist metal finishing.
- Varied work across automotive, motorcycle, truck, lure and custom machined components.
