We are seeking an experienced Malay Language Instructor to support the Defence Force School of Languages (DFSL) in the delivery of the Malay Modular Proficiency Course (MPC).
ABOUT THE DEFENCE FORCE SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES
The Defence Force School of Languages (DFSL) has been supporting the Languages Other Than English (LOTE) capability of the Australian Defence Force for over 75 years. It provides Defence personnel with language skills that enable them to undertake operational, diplomatic and international engagement roles both within Australia and overseas.

- Contract Period: 18 January 2027 - 10 December 2027
- Location: Defence Force School of Languages (DFSL), RAAF Williams, Laverton VIC
- Hours of Engagement: 35.00 hours per week (Monday to Friday)

ABOUT THE ROLE
The successful candidate will work as a Malay Language Instructor to assist the Defence Force School of Languages (DFSL) in delivering the Malay Modular Proficiency Course (MPC), including Modules 1, 2 and 3. Working under the guidance and supervision of DFSL staff, the successful applicant will deliver high-quality language training to Australian Defence Force personnel.
The role includes delivering up to 20 hours of language instruction each week, with the remaining time dedicated to lesson preparation, course development, assessment activities and other instructional duties. The successful candidate may also be required to support International Immersion Training (IIT)
activities as directed by DFSL.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Deliver the Malay Modular Proficiency Course (Modules 1, 2 and 3) to Defence personnel.
- Deliver up to 20 hours of language instruction each week.
- Prepare engaging lesson plans and learning activities.
- Develop and update course materials and learning resources where required.
- Prepare, administer and mark assessments in accordance with DFSL requirements.
- Provide timely feedback to learners to support their language development.
- Work collaboratively with DFSL staff and subject matter experts.
- Participate in Defence-directed onboarding and mandatory training.
- Support International Immersion Training (IIT) activities where required.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE), or
- A tertiary qualification in Teaching or Education.
Experience
- High level of proficiency in Malay.
- Experience teaching Languages Other Than English (LOTE), preferably to adult learners.
- Sound knowledge of contemporary language teaching methodologies.
- Sound knowledge of Malay history, politics, society and culture.
- High level of proficiency in both written and spoken English
- Sound computer and IT skills in the delivery and development of learning materials.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENT
Applicants must have previous experience working at the Defence Force School of Languages (DFSL) or a similar language training workplace.
SECURITY REQUIREMENT
Successful candidates will be required to provide a Police Check valid within 28 days prior to contract commencement.
Rates of pay will be commensurate with relevant skills and experience. Employment will be on a fixed-term contract basis with Fortis Consulting, subject to contract award.
