The Senior Protection Engineer will be a primary point of contact for Vertex’s high voltage clients. The role requires a hands‑on problem solver with strong protection relay testing and commissioning experience, combined with practical knowledge of primary HV assets and power systems commissioning.
Regular travel to work sites and providing support remotely form essential part of this role.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform protection relay testing, commissioning, and fault finding on HV/LV electrical systems
- Configure and test protection schemes including:
- Line differential and distance protection
- Conduct commissioning activities for primary plant including:
- Switchgear
- CTs and VTs
- RMUs and substations
- Execute primary and secondary injection testing
- Carry out functional testing, interlocking checks, and end-to-end testing
- Review and interpret:
- Perform relay setting implementation and validation
- Assist with IEC 61850 configuration and commissioning activities
- Support power system studies and protection coordination implementation
- Prepare commissioning reports, test sheets, ITPs, and technical documentation
- Lead commissioning activities during shutdowns and brownfield projects
- Mentor junior engineers and technicians
- Liaise with clients, site personnel, and project stakeholders
Preferred Relay & System Experience:
- Experience with one or more of the following is highly desirable:
- Schneider Electric – Sepam/Micom/EcoStruxure
- SEL – SEL relays and RTAC
Preferred Test Equipment Experience:
- Primary injection test sets
- HV insulation and diagnostic test equipment
- Ductor and transformer test equipment
Degree in Electrical Engineering or A-Grade Electrician or equivalent
Minimum 5+ years’ experience in protection testing and commissioning
Strong understanding of HV power systems and protection philosophies
Practical knowledge of primary HV equipment and commissioning practices
Ability to work independently on-site during shutdowns and commissioning projects
Robust troubleshooting and fault-finding skills
Excellent communication and report writing skills
Highly Regarded:
- Mining and heavy industrial experience
- Arc flash and power system studies exposure
- HV switching qualification or exposure
Great hourly rate + penalties
Full-time role under the Vertex Enterprise Agreement
Monday to Friday with regular overtime opportunities
