Surfcoast Financial Group is a locally owned financial advisory business with offices in Torquay, Geelong and Mildura. Our qualified team provides personalised advice and strategies across all areas of financial planning, including savings and investments, retirement planning, tax optimisation, risk management, SMSFs, superannuation and estate planning.
We are seeking an SMSF Accountant with a minimum of five years’ recent Australian experience.
The successful candidate will have strong experience managing end-to-end SMSF compliance obligations and will hold CPA or CA qualifications.
Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills will be essential for working effectively with clients and team members.
Position Summary
The SMSF Accountant will be responsible for preparing and administering Self-Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) financial statements, tax returns, compliance obligations and related accounting services. This role requires a strong understanding of Australian superannuation legislation, accounting standards and taxation requirements, along with a commitment to delivering excellent client service.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with accountants, financial advisers, auditors and clients to ensure funds remain compliant and that accurate, timely financial reporting is delivered.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare SMSF financial accounts and tax returns.
Manage SMSF compliance requirements.
Process accounting records and reconcile investment portfolios.
Reconcile bank accounts,
member balances, pensions and investment transactions.
Calculate member balances and pension payments.
Prepare journals, workpapers and supporting schedules.
Maintain accurate client records and documentation.
Liaise with auditors to resolve queries.
A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Commerce or a related discipline.
A minimum of five years’ experience in an Australian public practice accounting workplace.
Experience using a range of accounting packages, including Xero, Class, BGL and MYOB.
Good knowledge of superannuation, payroll and small business requirements.
Demonstrated experience preparing SMSF financial statements and tax returns.
Excellent knowledge of Australian taxation legislation.
A strong understanding of SMSF legislation and compliance requirements.
The ability to work independently.
Sound analytical skills.
The ability to build and maintain positive client relationships.
A collaborative approach when working with financial advisers and external professionals.
A solid, positive work ethic and a genuine team-focused attitude.
CPA or CA qualification.
Experience using Class Super or similar SMSF software.
Experience with Xero, MYOB Quickbooks and/or Reckon
Knowledge of investment accounting.
Experience working with pension funds and estate-related SMSF matters.
Remuneration will be negotiated based on experience, with incentives linked to client satisfaction, retention and productivity.
