Casual Aquarist Opportunity — Hobart Zoo and Aquarium

Location: Richmond, Tasmania

Are you passionate about marine life, aquatic animal care, and conservation? Hobart Zoo and Aquarium is looking for a casual Aquarist to join our team. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on Aquatic animal care, is comfortable working with aquatic Life Support Systems, and is keen to help create a great visitor experience.

About the Role

- Assist with the daily care of aquatic animals, including fish, corals invertebrates, and other aquarium species as required.
- Maintain clean, safe, and well-presented aquarium displays, tanks, and back-of-house areas.
- Prepare feeds, assist with feeding routines, and monitor animal behaviour, health, and wellbeing.
- Support water quality testing, filtration maintenance, and general life-support system checks.
- Educate visitors about aquatic animals, conservation, and responsible care of marine and freshwater environments.
- Work collaboratively with the team to support safe and smooth daily aquarium operations.

Required Experience and Skills

- Previous experience caring for aquatic animals, either paid, volunteer, or through study.
- A genuine interest in aquatic animal welfare, conservation, and high-quality animal care.
- Confidence working around water, tanks,



filtration systems, and animal care equipment.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to engage visitors of all ages.
- Availability for casual shifts, including weekends, public holidays, and school holiday periods as required.
- A positive attitude and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Desirable Qualifications

- Formal qualifications in aquaculture, marine biology, animal studies, zoology, or a related field.
- Previous experience in an aquarium, aquaculture facility, zoo, wildlife park, or animal care setting.
- Understanding of water quality testing, filtration, and aquatic life-support systems.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Working with Vulnerable People registration.
