About the role

Applications are sought for the 2027 clinical year, commencing February 2027 for a period of two years, with possible extension. To be eligible to apply you must be PGY5+ as of February 2027.

Canberra Health Services (CHS) focuses on the delivery of high quality, effective, person‑centred care, providing acute, sub‑acute, primary and community‑based health services to the Australian Capital Territory and surrounding regions.

General Physicians provide high quality, holistic and comprehensive care for patients with complex medical needs in hospital and ambulatory care settings, working closely with subspecialty colleagues and within a multidisciplinary team environment.

General Medicine advanced training at CHS offers trainees diverse clinical and educational experiences, preparing them for career opportunities across metropolitan and regional settings.

CHS is accredited for 2 years of advanced training in General and Acute Medicine by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Advanced training is undertaken via terms at Canberra and North Canberra Hospitals.

General Medicine at CHS admits a majority of complex and undifferentiated patients with multiple active medical conditions, eating disorders,

and toxicology syndromes requiring medical stabilisation. The Acute Medical Unit is a 48‑hour stay ward, designed to deliver timely, evidence‑based, and holistic care during admission. The model of care allows further work‑up of patients in a non‑ED clinical space before discharge or transfer.

North Canberra Hospital is a 297‑bed secondary care facility with a large general medical unit and support from a level‑4 ICU, CCU, stroke unit, 24‑hour endoscopy service and surgical services.

Ambulatory care experience is incorporated into the clinical terms in General Medicine and sub‑specialty clinics.

As part of the program, there is dedicated learning and research time, along with a structured education program. Trainees are encouraged to undertake research, attend scientific meetings, and gain experience in health system management, teaching and training.

Prior to commencement, successful candidates will be required to:

- Comply with CHS Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy

Note: This is a temporary position available for a period of up to 12 months.

Our Vision: creating exceptional health care together

Our Role: to be a health service that is trusted by our community

Our Values: Reliable, Progressive, Respectful and Kind

CHS is committed to workforce diversity and to creating an inclusive workplace. We welcome applications from all diversity groups, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability and people who identify as LGBTQIA+.

The ACT public service is committed to closing the gap, underpinned by the belief that when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a genuine say in the design and delivery of policies, programs and services that affect them, better life outcomes are achieved.
