Research premise AI did not break consent. AI revealed it. The breach happened long before the model arrived. For decades, digital systems treated consent as a checkbox, banner, buried clause, account permission, default setting, or momentary click.

A signal is not the same as understanding. A click is not the same as authorization. Silence is not the same as permission. Access is not the same as trust. AI raised the stakes because it does not merely store, transmit, or display information.

If those patterns do not appear, the theory must change.
