An exciting opportunity has become available for a Full-Time Medical Laboratory Scientist (Second in Charge - 2IC) to join our Molecular Pathology team based at our Clayton laboratory. Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, the successful applicant will provide technical leadership and day-to-day operational support to ensure the efficient delivery of high-quality molecular diagnostic services.

The position involves working in a fast-paced environment and will be suitable for individuals who pride themselves on the level of accuracy in their work and have a strong customer focus. You will work as part of an experienced and dedicated team with exposure to a wide diversity of work. The preferred applicants will be flexible, punctual, self-motivated, display initiative, be able to work with minimal supervision with the ability to participate in a rotating roster that includes afternoon, weekend and public holiday shifts.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide day-to-day operational leadership and support to the Molecular Pathology team in the absence of the Laboratory Manager.

Assist with staff supervision, workflow coordination and roster management to ensure efficient laboratory operations.

Support the training, competency assessment, mentoring and ongoing development of scientific staff.

Perform and oversee the processing of specimens within the Molecular Infectious Diseases Laboratory, ensuring instrumentation, assays and workflows are operating effectively.

Verify and authorise patient results in accordance with laboratory procedures, quality requirements and regulatory standards.

Ensure compliance with NATA accreditation requirements, laboratory policies, quality management systems and regulatory standards.

Monitor quality indicators and participate in quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives.

Assist with the implementation, verification and validation of new assays, equipment and methodologies.

Maintain a high-quality, accurate, efficient and team-oriented laboratory setting that supports exceptional patient care.

Prioritise specimens through interpretation of referrals, clinical notes and testing requirements to ensure appropriate turnaround times.

Determine appropriate specimen requirements and testing pathways for requested investigations.

Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders,



providing timely technical advice and customer service.

Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance laboratory efficiency, service delivery and patient outcomes.

Ensure all Company Work Health and Safety (WH&S;) policies, procedures and legislative requirements are observed.

To be considered for this role you will need to possess the following:

A degree in Laboratory Science or an AIMS-accredited equivalent qualification.

A minimum of 10 years' experience working in a molecular diagnostic laboratory.

Demonstrated experience in a senior scientific or leadership role within a diagnostic laboratory.

Proven ability to supervise, mentor, coach and develop scientific staff.

Strong knowledge of molecular diagnostic techniques, instrumentation and laboratory workflows.

Demonstrated understanding of NATA accreditation requirements, quality management systems and laboratory compliance standards.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

High attention to detail, with the ability to work accurately in a fast-paced environment while meeting quality standards and key performance indicators (KPIs).

Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise competing demands and meet deadlines.

Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a high-performing team.

A proactive, flexible and customer-focused approach to service delivery.

Demonstrated commitment to fostering a positive, collaborative and high-performing team culture while supporting continuous improvement and operational excellence.
