Role Description This full-time, on-site Political Journalist role is based in Canberra.
The Political
Journalist will report on federal political developments with a focus on their impact on business, finance, and the broader economy in Western Australia. Day-to-day responsibilities include researching and investigating stories, conducting interviews with key political and industry stakeholders, attending press conferences and parliamentary briefings, and producing clear, accurate, and engaging news articles and analysis pieces for both print and online. The role involves monitoring policy changes, legislative activity, and regulatory announcements, developing reliable sources within political and business circles, and collaborating with editors and other reporters to align coverage with editorial priorities.
The Political
Journalist is expected to meet deadlines, adhere to ethical and legal standards, and contribute story ideas that deepen readers’ understanding of the political landscape and its business implications.
Qualifications
- Strong reporting, researching, and interviewing skills, with the ability to gather and verify complex political and economic information.
- Excellent news writing and analytical writing capabilities, including clear storytelling, concise explanation of policy issues, and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of Australian political processes, public policy, and economic frameworks, and an interest in the intersection between politics and business.
- Ability to work on-site in a fast-paced newsroom environment, manage multiple deadlines, and collaborate effectively with editors and colleagues.
- High ethical standards, sound news judgment, and familiarity with media law and responsible journalism practices.
- Proficiency with digital tools for research, content management, and audience engagement; experience working across online and print platforms is an advantage.
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, political science, or a related field, or equivalent skilled experience in political or business reporting.
- Previous experience covering politics, government, or business news is highly regarded; demonstrated ability to develop and maintain source networks is beneficial.
