Details: Working at Legal Aid Commission (ACT) is an opportunity to do challenging and rewarding work and make a meaningful contribution to the circumstances of disadvantaged and vulnerable clients and communities in the ACT.
The Criminal Legal Practice at Legal Aid ACT provides advice, assistance and representation to people in the ACT who are charged with criminal offences, including through duty lawyer services at the ACT Magistrates Court and Children’s Court. The practice provides ongoing assistance for substantive matters including defended hearings, trials and appeals in the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and the High Court.. The Practice plays an important role in supporting access to justice by assisting clients who may need one-off help at court or ongoing representation through a grant of legal assistance.
The Criminal Legal Practice Supervisor will be required to manage the administrative aspects of the Criminal Legal Practice, maintain and oversee rostering of lawyers and legal support, and support the Head of Criminal Practice with strategic initiatives.

Supervisor will be a participative and positive team member in a dynamic work environment, and will require strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills to ensure effective client and stakeholder service delivery and a high level of flexibility and adaptability in a rapidly changing environment. The role requires constant problem solving and knowledge of criminal procedure and a robust grasp of internal policies.
About the position:
In this role, you will coordinate the day-to-day administrative operations of the Criminal Legal Practice, including workflow allocation, rostering,
reporting and support arrangements for lawyers and legal support staff. You will assist the Head of Practice by monitoring practice needs, improving procedures, supporting workforce planning and ensuring administrative systems operate effectively. You will also contribute to staff recruitment, onboarding, training and performance processes, while promoting safe, ethical and consistent work practices across the team.
You will liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including other practice areas and the AFP and DPP to maintain productive working relationships.

- The successful candidate will be required to undergo a background check during the recruitment process, and an offer of employment is conditional on satisfactory results.
Note: This is a temporary position available for a period of up to 12 months. Selection may be based on application and referee reports only. A Merit Pool may be established from this selection process and may be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months.
These positions will be required to work at our office location, due to the in-person nature of our legal work.
