Mechanical Maintenance Technician - Food Manufacturing
Our client is an established food manufacturer operating across two production facilities in Melbourne's south-east.
The business manufactures a range of food and bakery products for major Australian customers, including products produced within a dedicated gluten-free facility.
They are looking for an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Technician to support the safe and reliable operation of their production equipment.
Position Overview
This is a permanent, hands-on mechanical maintenance position, based primarily at the smaller gluten-free production facility, with support also provided to the nearby main manufacturing site when required.
You will be the main day-to-day maintenance presence at the gluten-free site and will work with a high level of autonomy. Support will be available from the Maintenance Manager for larger or more complex issues, but you will need to be comfortable diagnosing faults, completing repairs and managing your own maintenance priorities.
This is not an engineering management, design or general handyman position. It will suit an experienced mechanical maintenance professional who enjoys being on the tools, taking ownership of equipment and keeping a production site operating reliably.
The role is Monday to Friday on day shift, with very limited after-hours work.
Key responsibilities
- Responding to mechanical breakdowns and completing planned and preventative maintenance
- Fault finding across industrial mixers, conveyors, motors, belts, bearings and related production machinery
- Completing mechanical repairs,
equipment adjustments, component replacements and minor welding or fabrication
- Diagnosing recurring equipment faults and identifying whether issues are mechanical or electrical
- Coordinating licensed electricians or specialist support where required
- Monitoring equipment condition and addressing issues before they impact production
- Managing maintenance priorities independently at the gluten-free production site
- Supporting maintenance requirements at the nearby main manufacturing facility when required
- Working closely with production staff, site management and the Maintenance Manager
- Testing equipment and safely returning machinery to production
- Maintaining accurate maintenance records and reporting outstanding equipment issues
- Keeping tools, parts and work areas clean and complying with food safety, hygiene and foreign matter control requirements
Successful candidate will have the following attributes
- A relevant mechanical trade, maintenance or technical qualification
- Previous hands-on experience in a mechanical maintenance, maintenance technician or similar manufacturing role
- Strong mechanical fault-finding, breakdown and preventative maintenance experience
- Experience maintaining conveyors, mixers, motors, belts, bearings or similar production equipment
- Minor welding or fabrication experienceBasic knowledge of motors and electrical fault identification, with a transparent understanding of when licensed support is required
- The ability to work autonomously, identify issues and manage competing maintenance priorities
- A proactive approach and willingness to address maintenance or safety issues without waiting to be instructed
- Strong safety awareness and a clean, organised approach to maintenance work
- Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively with production staff and management
- Reliable transport and the ability to work across two nearby production sites
- Full Australian working rights
Previous experience within food, beverage, bakery, FMCG, packaging or pharmaceutical manufacturing will be highly regarded, but bakery-specific experience is not essential.
Candidates from other manufacturing environments will also be considered where they can demonstrate strong mechanical capability, autonomy and an understanding of the hygiene standards required within food production.
The successful candidate must understand the importance of protecting exposed product, controlling tools and components and leaving machinery and surrounding production areas clean after completing maintenance work.
The business is entering an important production period and applications will be reviewed immediately.
