About The Role

This role sits within Good Shepherd’s National Financial Counselling team as part of Service Navigation and Support, working with diverse cohorts including victim survivors of family and domestic violence and people experiencing financial hardship and complex life circumstances.

As a Financial Counsellor, you will provide intensive support through in-depth assessments (phone, video, and face-to-face), short-term case work, advocacy, and tailored financial options. Using a trauma-informed and empowerment-based approach, you will help clients navigate financial stress while supporting their participation in decision-making.

You will manage your own caseload, triaging and referring clients to appropriate services, and working collaboratively with internal teams and external partners to deliver holistic support. Maintaining accurate records, building strong networks, and contributing to organisational objectives are key aspects of the role, alongside supporting vulnerable clients facing debt and financial difficulty.

This is a contracted role until April 2028.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide financial counselling via phone and face-to-face, including information, advocacy, and referrals
- Support clients to make informed decisions and improve their long-term financial capability
- Work respectfully with clients from diverse backgrounds with complex needs
- Manage client caseloads, including maintaining accurate and timely records
- Triage and refer clients to appropriate internal and external support services
- Build and maintain strong networks with community partners and service providers
- Collaborate with team members to achieve positive client outcomes
- Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and Financial Counselling Australia standards

About You

- Hold a diploma of Financial Counselling




- Have experience supporting individuals in financial distress, ideally within community services or the not-for-profit sector
- Strong understanding of the community sector and client support frameworks
- Knowledge of family violence, including financial abuse, and experience working within risk frameworks such as MARAM
- Demonstrated ability to apply trauma-informed practice
- Experience working with diverse communities, with an understanding of intersectionality
- Collaborative team player with a strong commitment to ethical practice and positive client outcomes
- Ability to use case management software, Microsoft Office suite and interpret financial regulations and hardship provision
- Membership, or eligibility for membership, with the relevant State financial counselling peak organisation
