We’re currently recruiting for 2 x Principal Java / Bespoke Software Engineers on a 12-month contract with a government organisation.

This is a senior full-stack development opportunity supporting a critical lifeline application used to coordinate assets in maritime and aviation search and rescue incidents, as well as support the triage and response to pollution events.

The role will focus on supporting, maintaining and developing cloud and back-end solutions across Java, AWS and Oracle, working within a small team of highly skilled Java and .NET developers and subject matter experts.

Key responsibilities include:

- Developing enterprise-grade software using Java and Oracle
- Developing and maintaining web-based UI using ReactJS, CSS and HTML
- Designing and implementing Oracle data models
- Developing database operations using Java ORM frameworks
- Producing detailed design artefacts and technical specifications
- Working with RESTful OpenAPI, SOAP WSDLs and XML Schemas
- Developing and maintaining DevOps workflows using Jenkins, Git, Maven and Ant
- Supporting software releases and established release processes
- Providing technical advice and support to senior stakeholders
- Participating in a team-based on-call roster

Key skills and experience:

- 8+ years’ Java development experience
- Strong enterprise Java and software design patterns
- JPA,



Hibernate and Spring/Spring Boot
- REST and SOAP APIs, OpenAPI, XML/JSON and XSD
- AWS development – EC2, Lambda, API Gateway, S3/SQS and CloudFormation
- Strong Oracle/database experience, including data modelling and stored procedures
- ReactJS, HTML and CSS
- Unix/Linux and Bash
- Maven, Git, Jenkins and continuous integration
- Unit, system integration and automated testing
- Strong software engineering and documentation skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills The role is based in Canberra with hybrid working arrangements. Successful candidates will initially need to spend time in the Canberra office to become familiar with the large and complex setting, with ongoing arrangements negotiable thereafter.

The successful candidate must be able to obtain Baseline security clearance.

The role also includes participation in a team-based 24/7 on-call roster. Overnight escalations have historically been very rare.
