82 North is partnering with a Federal Government organisation to recruit two Principal Java Software Engineers to support and enhance a nationally significant operational platform that underpins critical emergency response capabilities.
This is an opportunity to work on a highly complex enterprise application where reliability, performance and resilience genuinely matter. You'll join a small, experienced engineering team responsible for maintaining, improving and evolving a mission-critical system used in real-world operational environments.
This role would suit a highly experienced Java engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, designing robust enterprise solutions and working across backend services, cloud technologies and large-scale system integrations.

The role
As a Principal Software Engineer,
you'll take a leading technical role across the full software development lifecycle, contributing to the design, development, support and continuous improvement of a sophisticated enterprise platform.
Working alongside experienced developers and technical specialists, you'll provide technical leadership while developing new capabilities, supporting production systems and ensuring the ongoing reliability of critical business services.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain enterprise-grade Java applications and backend services
- Develop and enhance cloud-based integrations using AWS services
- Design and implement robust REST and SOAP integrations with internal and external systems
- Develop and maintain Oracle database solutions, including data models and stored procedures
- Produce high-quality technical designs, specifications and engineering documentation
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment processes
- Support software releases and production deployments
- Troubleshoot complex production issues across distributed systems
- Contribute to architecture decisions and provide technical guidance to stakeholders and leadership
- Participate in an on-call support roster for critical production systems (historically very low call-out frequency).
About you You'll be an experienced enterprise software engineer who enjoys working on large, complex systems and takes pride in delivering reliable, maintainable software.
You'll ideally bring experience across most of the following:
Core Tech Skills
- 8+ years' commercial Java development experience
- Enterprise Java, Spring Framework and Spring Boot
- JPA, Hibernate and enterprise design patterns
- RESTful APIs, SOAP services, OpenAPI, XML, JSON and related integration technologies
- Oracle Database, PL/SQL, data modelling and SQL optimisation
- AWS services including EC2, Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, S3 and CloudFormation
- Linux/Unix and Bash scripting
- Maven, Jenkins, Git and modern CI/CD practices
- Automated testing and software quality practices.
Desirable Experience
- Java EE and JMS messaging
- Reactive programming
- ReactJS, HTML and CSS
- Enterprise integration platforms
- Mission-critical or high-availability operational systems
- Government, Defence, aviation, transport, emergency services or other highly regulated environments.
