About the Organisation
The Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS) was established in 1973 to address the specific medical needs of Victorian Aboriginal communities. The organisation has expanded steadily over the past 50 years to provide a comprehensive range of medical, dental, and social services for our community.

About the Opportunity
An Aboriginal Health Worker in the Koori Maternity Service supports Aboriginal women and families during pregnancy, birth and after the baby is born. They provide culturally safe care, help women feel comfortable in the health system, and support communication with doctors and midwives. Aboriginal Health Workers also offer emotional support, health education and advocate for families to make sure their cultural needs are respected.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide culturally safe support to Aboriginal and Torres Islander Women and families throughout pregnancy, birth and postnatal care
- Conduct health assessments and screening, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander 715 health checks
- Provide health education (nutrition, breastfeeding, parenting, pregnancy care)
- Assist with administrative tasks for the Koori Maternity Services (KMS)
- Build trusting relationships with families and the community to ensure their needs and culture beliefs are respected
Pre-Requisites
Essential:
- This position is only available to persons of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (as permitted under The Victorian Equal Opportunity Act 2010 s12).
- Current First Aid and CPR certificate or willingness to obtain upon commencement
- Victorian Working with Children Check
- National Police Check
- Victorian Driver’s Licence
Essential Qualification(s):Qualification in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health
Desirable:
- Experience working in ATSI Health, MMEx or Medicare.
