Northern Health are seeking applications from motivated and suitably experienced Registered Psychiatric Nurses for the position of Consultation Liaison Psychiatric Nurse to join the mental health team at The Northern Hospital in Epping, Victoria.

Northern Health is the major provider of acute, maternity, sub-acute, mental health, specialist, community and home-based services in Melbourne’s rapidly growing outer north.

Services are provided through our six main campuses:

Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn and Mernda Community Hospitals Centres and Kilmore District Hospital. In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, Mill Park, Mernda and Coburg.

About the Role

The EMH CL Service is a multi-disciplinary team, which provides a 24hour, 7-day/week assessment and treatment service to people with a mental health diagnosis who have been admitted medically at The Northern Hospital during business hours.

The CL provides an afterhours service via the NAMHS on Call Psychiatry Registrar. The CL Service also provides Education and support to the Medical Treatment Teams in the areas of treatment and recovery for people presenting with a comorbid mental health issue.

We are seeking a compassionate, experienced nurse to join the CL team who is able to work in a 0.2 capacity.

This would look like one weekend every fortnight (Saturday and Sunday together).



The CL Psychiatric Nurse would be working autonomously in the initial review and support of mental health consumers in medical units and would liaise with the on Call Psychiatric Registrar for support and to conduct joint reviews as required. They would also follow up on tasks as handed over by the Monday-Friday CL team.

Please note this role requires a minimum of 7 years mental health experience.

This position is responsible for:

- Provide a high level of clinical expertise in the assessment, ongoing management and recovery to consumers with complex medical and mental health related needs and their family/carers.
- With CL providing a service to all inpatient units of TNH, including dialysis, CAHU, SSU, MWHU, ICU, Units A, B, C, D, E.
- With CL secondary consultation and the provision of education related to psychiatric disorders, treatments and MHWA 2022 to generalist clinicians.
- With CL providing assessment and treatment to referred patients admitted to Northern Hospital and presenting with significant emotional distress, altered mood, thought, perception or behaviour, unexplained physical health symptoms which the treating team feel my have an underlying psychological cause.
- With CL providing consultation for the management of behaviourally disturbed or compromised inpatients of the Northern Hospital. Assisting and supporting generalist nursing staff in the development and implementation of behavioural nursing care.
- Risk assessment of inpatients of The Northern Hospital at risk because of psychiatric symptoms ensuring clinically indicated observations are observed and the appropriate utilization clinical resources.
- Support and monitoring of clients of NAMHS and NWAMHS who require admission for medical/surgical treatment.

To be successful in this role you will have:
- Experience or strong interest in CL Psychiatry essential.




- Proven ability to work autonomously and to perform risk assessments
- Participated and/or lead NSQHS accreditation and/or Aged Quality and Safety Commission Accreditation
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team setting
- Demonstrated ability to lead, manage and support a clinical team
- Role model of NH values and for the profession of nursing and/or midwife
- Good understanding of the NSQHS national standards and/or Aged Care Quality and Safety Accreditation Standard
- Evidence of and commitment to patient customer focused care, clinical governance quality improvement
