Senior Identity Engineer

Behind one of Australia's largest consumer tech brands sits one squad of engineers keeping the lights on for a critical service.
Every login. Every token. Every API call runs through this platform, used by millions of people every day.
You'll join the Public Identity Platform squad that owns every authenticated interaction across the business: the identity platform itself, authentication and authorisation, plus the developer portal and public API gateway that external businesses use to access the platform's APIs.
Identity engineering is one of the rare specialisations where the work touches everything, and this squad's roadmap over the next two years is as ambitious as it gets: evolving the identity platform and reshaping how external businesses consume the platform's APIs.
If you're a strong backend engineer who's touched auth and wants to go deep in it, or an identity engineer who wants consumer scale, this role's for you.
The Role:
- A senior IC position on a lean squad of 4 engineers, working alongside a platform expert with 10+ years on these systems and a newly hired Team Lead, with real ownership from day one.
- Senior engineers here take medium-sized initiatives from design through to production delivery themselves. High accountability, no hand-holding.
- The platform is in good shape. This isn't a rescue mission,
the tech is up-to-date and well maintained. The work is an ambitious roadmap: a major identity platform evolution serving millions of users, and reshaping how external businesses consume the platform's APIs.
- Mostly backend (80-90%), with occasional work on login experiences.
- Mentor junior engineers informally, no direct reports.
The Stack:
- C# / .NET 8, ASP.NET Core, AWS, Duende IdentityServer, OAuth2 / OpenID Connect, SNS/SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, Redis, PostgreSQL/MySQL, CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code.
What You'll Bring:
- Strong backend engineering in C# / .NET building distributed services
- Working knowledge of modern authentication: OAuth2, OpenID Connect, token lifecycles, or hands-on integration with identity platforms (Cognito, Auth0, Okta, Azure AD or similar)
- Ideally, production time with Duende IdentityServer or IdentityServer4, identity provider migrations, or fine-grained authorisation systems (SpiceDB, OpenFGA or similar)
- You've built for scale on public-facing services, using microservices, event-driven patterns (SNS/SQS, EventBridge) and cloud platforms (AWS ideal)
- API gateway exposure is a plus: external developer onboarding, usage metering, credential management
- A track record of owning solutions end to end and mentoring those around you
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field
