Transport Driver Role

NDIS transport drivers help participants with disability and older adults get where they need to go safely and on time. The role involves driving, assisting with boarding and alighting, handling mobility aids, and checking in on participants throughout the journey. You will also be the first or last person a participant interacts with each day.

Responsibilities

- Drive participants to and from health appointments, day programs, work, shopping centres, and social activities.
- Assist with boarding and alighting, including handling wheelchairs, walkers and other mobility aids.
- Ensure safe and comfortable journeys, monitoring participant wellbeing throughout.
- Maintain a skilled, punctual presence and communicate effectively with participants and providers.

Required Qualifications

- Current Australian driver’s licence with a clean record (minimum 2 years full licence).
- Reliable, roadworthy vehicle maintained to a safe standard.
- Experience or willingness to work with people with disability or older adults.
- Strong punctuality and ability to follow a schedule under real‑world conditions.
- Patience and good communication skills when supporting passengers with varied needs.
- Physical capacity to assist participants with boarding, alighting, and mobility aids.
- Knowledge of local roads and services in and around Australia.
- MR or HR licence and wheelchair‑accessible vehicle experience (valued for specialist roles).

Checks and Credentials

- Driver’s licence & reliable vehicle – required.
- Licence renewal – $30 to $100 per year, ongoing maintenance.
- Vehicle inspection – $110 to $160,



valid 5 years, 4–8 weeks to process.
- Passenger transport / driver accreditation (state‑specific) – $40 to $200, application plus medical check.
- CPR – $90 to $160, 1‑day course, valid 3 years.
- Wheelchair‑accessible vehicle training / disability awareness training – free to $300, half‑day to 1‑day course, often provided by employer.

Pay and Working Arrangements

Pay depends on employment model, vehicle type, shift timing, and state. Terms are negotiated directly with providers. Typical rates based on the SCHADS Award (MA ) are:

- Weekday $27–32 per hour
- Saturday $40–48 per hour
- Sunday $53–63 per hour
- Public holiday $66–79 per hour

Casual employees may receive a 25% loading, resulting in approximately $34–40 per hour for ordinary casual hours.
