About the role This role is for a Staff Software Engineer within the Unreal Ecosystem team at Riot Games. The primary focus is on improving performance, developing tooling, and enhancing infrastructure to support the organization's game development efforts. You will be responsible for defining the technical strategy and creating robust solutions that enable multiple game teams to work efficiently and effectively. As a key member of the team, you will influence the technical direction of the Unreal Ecosystem, ensuring that it scales and adapts to the evolving needs of Riot's game development pipeline.

What you'll do
- Design, develop, and maintain shared plugins, tools, and libraries that promote consistency and efficiency across multiple game teams within Riot.
- Create and execute technical roadmaps that balance immediate project requirements with the organization's long-term architectural vision.
- Facilitate technical design discussions, build consensus among diverse stakeholders, and ensure alignment on architectural decisions.
- Lead technical planning efforts, including breaking down complex projects into manageable tasks and establishing schedules for multi-month initiatives.
- Maintain high engineering standards through rigorous code reviews, comprehensive testing strategies, and continuous process improvements.
- Produce detailed technical documentation that clearly explains complex concepts and solutions to various disciplines within the organization.
- Participate in on-call rotations, troubleshoot live issues, and implement systemic fixes to ensure stability and performance.
- Mentor and guide team members, fostering technical growth and enhancing their professional skills.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including game developers, infrastructure engineers, and product managers, to deliver integrated solutions.
- Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies, evaluating their potential impact on Riot's Unreal Ecosystem.
- Contribute to the development of internal platforms, developer tools, and build systems to streamline workflows.
- Support the organization's technical strategy by providing insights and recommendations based on experience and industry best practices.
- Assist in the integration of Unreal Engine with other tools and systems used across Riot's development pipeline.
- Promote best practices in software development, including version control, testing, and documentation, across the team.
- Lead efforts to optimize performance and scalability of Unreal Engine-based tools and infrastructure.
- Engage with external Unreal Engine communities and stay informed of updates and new features relevant to Riot's needs.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 6 years of qualified experience in software development, with a strong emphasis on game or engine development.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience coding in C++, demonstrating proficiency in complex software systems.
- Deep understanding of software fundamentals such as concurrency, algorithms, and data structures.
- Proven track record of leading technical initiatives that impact multiple teams or projects.
- Experience managing technical direction, conducting design reviews, and developing architectural solutions.
- Ability to work across multiple codebases simultaneously, rather than focusing solely on a single product.
- Experience mentoring and developing other engineers, fostering a collaborative team environment.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical tradeoffs and gain stakeholder alignment.
- Experience working within cross-functional teams, including collaboration with artists, designers, and other engineers.
- Familiarity with modern game engines such as Unreal Engine or Unity, with a preference for Unreal Engine expertise.
- Knowledge of software development best practices, including version control, testing, and documentation.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex issues and implement systemic solutions efficiently.
- Robust organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
- Passion for game development and supporting tools that enhance creative workflows.
Nice to have
- Specific expertise in Unreal Engine, including C++ plugin development, build systems, or editor tooling.
- Experience creating internal platforms, developer tools, or CI/CD pipelines to automate and streamline development workflows.
- Background in consulting or supporting multiple product teams as a platform engineer, providing scalable solutions.
- Knowledge of game development workflows, pipeline automation, and industry challenges faced by large development teams.
- Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python or Lua used in game development environments.
- Experience working with large-scale infrastructure and cloud services to support development tools and pipelines.
