Senior Embedded Linux Engineer (Edge AI) Own the whole product, not one layer of it.
Most embedded roles hand you a single slice of the stack.
This one hands you the entire product: outdoor edge-AI sensors that see, hear and make sense of the world around them, from the Yocto build all the way to the field.
About
EdgeMachines
EdgeMachines is the deep-tech division of Schréder, a global leader in intelligent outdoor lighting and smart infrastructure with more than 50 years in the Australian market. We build the edge-AI sensing platforms that make next-generation lighting and smart-city infrastructure aware of what is happening around it. Picture a small, sharp engineering team with real autonomy, backed by the scale and stability of a global brand. The role
We are looking for a pragmatic senior engineer who likes working across boundaries.
Embedded
Linux is the core, but the problems reach into hardware integration, edge machine learning, audio analysis, device deployment and cloud data. You will not be the deepest specialist in all of it, and you do not need to be. What matters is the judgement and curiosity to move between layers and make the whole system more reliable. What you will work on
Own and improve the embedded Linux platform: Yocto builds, boot configuration, device trees, kernel changes, drivers and system services
Design better build, release, provisioning, flashing and over-the-air update workflows, plus diagnostics and fleet observability
Integrate real hardware such as cameras, microphones, cellular modems and sensors over I2C, SPI, UART, CSI, USB and PCIe
Harden device security: secure boot of firmware and kernel, key handling and vulnerability management
Profile and optimise on-device ML and computer vision, including quantisation and power-aware inference
Extend audio analysis: event detection and classification, direction of arrival, and multimodal detection alongside existing vision features
Contribute to the backend services, data pipelines, APIs and internal tools that support the deployed fleet What you will bring
Solid production software engineering experience, with substantial hands-on embedded Linux work
Fluency in C/C++ and Python, and confidence debugging software that talks directly to hardware
Experience with Yocto or a comparable embedded Linux build system A track record of improving deployment, update or operational reliability for connected devices
Sound engineering judgement, clear communication, and the ability to work independently in a small multidisciplinary team Bonus, not required (breadth is welcome, never expected)
Edge ML runtimes or NPUs, audio DSPs, cellular or low-power IoT connectivity, Linux networking, MQTT, streaming or time-series data, cloud infrastructure, or modern web development. Bring one or two and we are interested; you do not need the full list. Why you will want this
Genuine ownership from concept through to field deployment, not a sliver of someone else's system
Real next-gen technology, edge AI, audio and vision, running on physical products out in the world A complete, tangible product spanning outdoor electronics, embedded Linux, edge AI, wireless connectivity, cloud services and manufacturing
Small-team autonomy with the backing and security of a global company
Hybrid working, based in Sydney Apply
If you have deep embedded Linux experience and would rather own a whole product than maintain one corner of it, we would like to talk. Apply now Help build the next generation of intelligent lighting technology Please note, no unsolicited contact from agencies or recruiters
