Senior Scientist, LNP Process and Development at Flagship Pioneering, Inc. What you'll do
- Lead efforts to develop and optimize LNP formulations, focusing on critical parameters such as mixing conditions, lipid composition, encapsulation efficiency, and particle stability.
- Design and execute experiments to enhance the performance, stability, and manufacturability of LNPs containing modified DNA and cofactor mRNA.
- Collaborate with internal teams including formulation scientists, process engineers, and analytical groups to characterize LNPs and troubleshoot formulation challenges.
- Support scale-up activities by translating laboratory processes into scalable manufacturing protocols, ensuring consistency and reproducibility.
- Assist in the transfer of processes from research to manufacturing, working closely with external vendors or internal production teams to facilitate technology transfer.
- Analyze experimental data, interpret results, and prepare detailed reports to inform decision-making and further development efforts.
- Stay current with advances in LNP technology, nucleic acid delivery systems, and related fields to incorporate best practices into ongoing projects.
- Contribute to the development of process validation protocols, stability testing, and quality control strategies for LNP formulations.
- Participate in cross-disciplinary project meetings to align formulation strategies with overall project timelines and objectives.
- Troubleshoot formulation and process issues, providing technical guidance to team members and external partners.
- Assist in preparing documentation for regulatory submissions or internal quality audits related to LNP manufacturing processes.
Requirements
- A PhD in Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Bioengineering, or a related discipline, with a minimum of 3 years of relevant industry experience; or an M.S. with at least 8 years of experience; or a Bachelor's degree with 10 years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in process development, scale-up, or manufacturing of nanoparticle or LNP systems.
- Prior experience working with nucleic acid formulations, especially mRNA or DNA, is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of formulation techniques such as T mixing or similar scalable methods, along with proficiency in characterization techniques like dynamic light scattering (DLS), encapsulation efficiency assays, and stability testing.
- Proven ability to design experiments, analyze complex data sets, and troubleshoot technical challenges effectively.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly present technical information to multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to project challenges.
- Knowledge of regulatory considerations related to nanoparticle formulations and biologics is a plus.
Nice to have
- Experience with formulation screening, high-throughput optimization, and development of next-generation LNP systems.
- Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) processes and documentation requirements.
- Prior experience working in a biotech or pharmaceutical manufacturing setting, especially with scale-up and process validation.
- Knowledge of stability testing protocols and regulatory compliance standards for biologics and nanoparticle-based therapeutics.

Practical notes
- The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $143,000. Compensation will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, and skills.
