Job Overview
Your main duty is to assist the Team Leader in supervising the team and ensure work is carried out safely.
Responsible for the daily supervising of the maintenance and operational work carried out by the team and that the daily duties/activities are scheduled and carried out in a secure and effective manner while minimising the impact to the customer’s operations. As this position will be both shift and “hands on”, you will also be working within you assigned shift pattern on electrical, instrument, mechanical and control systems which involve the installation, modification, maintenance and repairs of all site Vanderlande equipment.
Responsibilities
- Assisting the Team leader to manage operations on your shift.
- As the 2IC in the team you will lead the team in the absence of the team leader
- Acts as major contributor to process improvements to improve service levels, methodologies and system processes.
- Initiates and implements improvements to the service levels, tooling, methodologies and system processes.
- Ensures the completion of all corrective and preventative maintenance tasks as set out by the O&M; Manager’s schedule and shift roster.
- Repairing, maintaining, calibrating and operating Vanderlande equipment.
- Ensure incident and accident reporting is done on time. You will work closely with the HSR on the team to ensure all reporting are done on time.
- Regular safety observations on tasks. Document all observations
- Quality control on all work performed by technicians
- Monitor customer operations to effectively execute maintenance schedule as to minimize customer operations.
- Ensures that your team responds methodically to all error notifications, errors, alarms, warnings and complaints on Vanderlande equipment and controlling flows and flow disturbances.
- Analyse data and Vanderlande control system information reports, for use in quality control, modification and calibration and system improvements.
- Weekly plant inspections on equipment
- Liaising with clients, suppliers and sub-contractors in the maintenance and repairs of Vanderlande equipment where required.
- Work in collaboration with off-site Vanderlande technical support via telephone, email, etc. where necessary to achieve optimal machine performance.
- Prepare and update daily paperwork/admin duties as set out by the Team leader.
- Assist the Team leader to ensure that all activities, breakdowns and incidents are clearly documented.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all Vanderlande equipment and attend training courses as required by the O&M; Manager.
- Ensures the transfer of equipment knowledge to other staff.
- Ensures that you and your team keep the workplace clean and tidy and observe OH&S; policies and/or procedures at all times.
- Reasonable flexibility will be required when needed to work additional hours if/when needed as reasonably practical (E.g. staying back to ensure proper and accurate shift handovers, be available to share information when not on shift, Etc.).
- Carry out any other maintenance duties the O&M; Manager requires where reasonably practical.
Company issued tools:
- Ensures that your team takes care of company issued tools and any abuse, miss-use and theft of company equipment, spares and tools are reported.
- Report any breakages of company issued tools and equipment to the O&M; Manager for replacement to be issued where reasonable.
- Any lost or recklessly broken tools will be replaced by the responsible person.
Qualifications & Skills
- A degree, diploma, or certificate in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related technical field is preferred.
- Strong mechanical and electrical skills, with a deep understanding of FMCG equipment and systems.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing complex machinery.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities, including experience in supervising maintenance teams within FMCG environments.
- Experiences in workplace safety and occupational health and safety practices, particularly relevant to FMCG operations.
- Knowledge of quality control procedures and the ability to enforce high-quality standards in FMCG equipment maintenance.
- Strong analytical capabilities to interpret data, control system reports, and diagnostics for efficient equipment management.
- Proficiency in maintaining accurate documentation of maintenance activities, incidents, and equipment breakdowns.
- A customer-oriented approach to minimise disruptions during maintenance activities in FMCG facilities and ensure client satisfaction.
- Effective communication, both written and verbal, for clear interactions with team members, clients, and external stakeholders in the sector.
- Experience in process improvement initiatives to enhance service levels, methodologies, and system processes.
- Willingness and ability to provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members, fostering their growth and development.
- Knowledge of industry-specific standards, regulations, and compliance requirements relevant to the FMCG sector.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including overtime, to ensure proper shift handovers and maintain a smooth workflow.
- Ability to serve as a technical point of contact for inquiries from internal and external stakeholders

- Participate in Developing, documenting, implementing and maintaining safe systems of work for their activities on site;
- If performing work, must provide adequate supervision, to ensure that documented safe systems of work are adhered to;
- Only perform work you have been trained on and deemed competent in by direct supervision
- Cease work where there is a perceived risk or known immediate risk to the health and safety of self or others. If the task cannot be done safely, do not do it.
- Allow for sufficient time to obtain the required safe work permits;
- Promote the involvement of their workers in work health and safety activities on site; be responsible for keeping the workplace in a clean and tidy condition;
- Actively and timely participate in work health and safety meetings and awareness training;
- Demonstrate commitment to work health and safety through their own actions and attitudes.
- Uses Personal Protective Equipment as required and directed.
