Trade & Investment Commissioner, The Americas

You. At the centre of big ideas.

Investment NSW seeks to appoint a commercial, people-oriented leader as NSW Trade & Investment Commissioner, Americas.

Based in San Francisco or New York City (will consider other relevant locations for the right candidate), leading NSW’s engagement across the Americas.

Champion NSW’s commercial and government interests in the Americas.

3-year term, Senior Executive Band 1 equivalent role.

Broad sector focus: Net zero (green tech, critical minerals), housing (construction tech), agrifood, life sciences and health, METS and digital tech. About the Role

As NSW Trade and Investment Commissioner, Americas, you will drive economic growth and prosperity for NSW by building strategic partnerships and facilitating trade and investment opportunities, particularly across the United States and Canada.

NSW and the United States share a long-standing, mutually beneficial trade and investment relationship, underpinned by deep commercial ties, shared strategic interests and strong people-to-people connections. The US has consistently been one of Australia’s and NSW’s most significant sources of foreign direct investment, with a growing presence in sectors central to NSW’s economic future, including critical technologies, clean energy, net zero, critical minerals and defense. The scale and diversity of the US market continue to present substantial opportunities for NSW businesses, particularly in technology, professional services, digital trade, education and health.

Canada is a likeminded partner of NSW with shared interests in resilient supply chains, strategic investment and economic security. There are opportunities to deepen bilateral engagement across critical sectors, including clean energy, critical minerals, advanced manufacturing, technology and defence. Canada is a growing destination for NSW exporters, including in digital tech, METS and agribusiness.

The Trade and Investment Commissioner, Americas will build on existing partnerships and develop new ones across the region to further enhance investment and trade, benefiting both NSW and the Americas.

The ideal candidate for this locally engaged position will be a commercially astute leader who has senior level public sector experience coupled with deep familiarity with the Americas as well as Australia. Recognised as a credible and trusted leader with a track record of building collaborative relationships and delivering results, the appointee will be known for excellent stakeholder engagement and for building high-performing teams. You will enjoy being hands-on while steering the team to deliver excellent outcomes for NSW.

The successful candidate will lead a team based in San Francisco, New York and Toronto, representing NSW’s whole-of-government interests and delivering commercial outcomes by fostering relationships with business, institutional stakeholders and government, including other state and federal government bodies.
