Lead/Senior Java Developer

We are seeking an experienced Lead Java Developer to support and enhance a mission-critical application within an Australian Government environment.

This role will lead development across complex Java, AWS and Oracle components while promoting robust engineering standards, automated testing and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design, development and refactoring of complex enterprise applications.

Develop and maintain Java, Java EE, JMS, AWS and Oracle components.

Define and promote software engineering standards and development practices.

Design and maintain REST APIs, SOAP services, WSDLs and XML schemas.

Develop Oracle data models and database functionality using Hibernate or JPA.

Implement and maintain automated testing frameworks.

Lead software builds, releases and CI/CD processes using Jenkins, Git, Maven and Ant.





Produce detailed technical designs, specifications and process documentation.

Review solution designs and provide technical guidance to developers and stakeholders.

Improve development processes, software quality and maintainability.

Participate in a low-volume on-call roster.

Essential Experience

Extensive experience delivering complex enterprise software solutions.

Strong Java and Java EE development experience.

Demonstrated experience leading software development and refactoring activities.

Experience establishing and enforcing engineering standards and guidelines.

Robust Oracle SQL/PLSQL, JMS and enterprise integration experience.

Experience with AWS, REST, SOAP, XML, Hibernate or JPA.

Solid automated testing, CI/CD and release management experience.

Proven ability to produce detailed technical documentation.

Experience supporting mission-critical production systems.

Experience with Australian Government projects and an active Baseline or higher security clearance will be highly regarded.

Location: Canberra, ACT

Engagement: 12 month Contract (starts from September 2026)
