The Independent National Security Legislation Monitor (INSLM) role is established under the INSLM Act 2010. The INSLM conducts independent reviews of Australia’s national security and counter-terrorism laws, assessing protections for rights and the laws’ necessity and proportionality.
The INSLM may act on initiative or by referral, is supported by staff in Canberra, and holds a statutory term of up to three years with possible renewal. Applicants must obtain security clearance.
