About TALS
TALS
is a community-controlled organisation providing culturally safe, holistic legal services across criminal, family, child safety and family violence prevention matters.
Our lawyers work alongside Aboriginal Liaison Officers and support staff to help clients navigate legal issues while addressing broader challenges such as housing, health, family violence and community connection.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Senior Lawyer
, you will provide legal advice, casework and representation in family and child safety matters across southern Tasmania.
The role may be appointed at
Level 1 or Level 2
, depending on your experience.
Level 1
suits newly admitted or early-career lawyers looking to develop advocacy and family law experience with solid mentoring.
Level 2
suits lawyers with experience in family, parenting or child safety matters who can manage files more independently and support junior team members.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct family and child safety casework




Provide legal advice to vulnerable clients
Appear in court and undertake advocacy work
Prepare correspondence, advice and court documents
Build relationships with Legal Aid, courts and community organisations
Participate in community legal education and law reform projects
Contribute to the after-hours roster supporting Aboriginal people in custody
About You
To be successful, you will need:
Admission, or eligibility for admission, as a legal practitioner in Tasmania
Current registration to work with vulnerable people
Current National Police Check
Experience, or strong interest, in family law, parenting and child safety matters
Court advocacy experience, or willingness to develop these skills
Strong written communication and file management skills
Experience working with vulnerable or trauma-affected clients
Understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
Resilience, empathy and professional boundaries
A genuine commitment to social justice
You will also receive:
23 days annual leave (with 17.5% annual leave loading) + 15 days personal/carer's leave

A collaborative, culturally grounded team environment
Weekend on-call is generally shared across lawyers and may occur approximately once every three months, with weekday on-call around one to two times per month.
