The Role
As part of Opera Australia's Technical Unit, the Fly's Supervisor plays a key role in delivering safe and efficient fly floor operations across productions. Working closely with the Head of Flys and Head Mechanist, this position ensures the highest standards of rigging, stagecraft and technical execution are maintained.
Key Responsibilities
Supervise the implementation of OA's operational procedures for the fly floor
Oversee operation and maintenance of stage machinery and equipment
Coordinate changeovers, act changes, and other production staging tasks
Apply theatrical rigging techniques as required
Interpret and apply technical drawings and ground plans
Ensure all work is carried out in compliance with relevant WHS legislation, Opera Australia policies, and safe working procedures and contribute to the development of production safety documentation
Demonstrate proficiency in carpentry, metal fabrication, and use of tools
Work independently and collaborate with other technical departments when required
Assist the Head of Flys in the daily running of the team and task management
General admin duties, including but not limited to; maintaining records, departmental documentation and reporting as required
About You
2+ years' experience as a Fly's Technician within theatre, live events or venues
Hold a Basic Rigging High Risk Work License
Demonstrated understanding of secure work practices and risk management in a technical production environment
Proven ability to work collaboratively with creative teams, technical personnel, performers, and other production staff
Problem solving and troubleshooting capability
Capable of carrying out manual handling tasks and comfortable working at heights
Practical knowledge and experience with the operation of various stage machinery and construction hand tools
Preferred
Intermediate or Advanced Rigging High Risk Work Licence
Advanced experience with rope access
Familiarity with the installation and operation of chain hoists
